Honda Top Box Installation
#1

I'm a new CB1100 owner as of November 21. Based on the great information on this forum, I decided to buy the Honda OEM Top Box from webike, including the appropriate rack for my 2013 model. In reading through the information on the Top Box, it looks like it may be designed for the "DLX" rear rack (N40 model). Has anyone successfully mounted the Honda Top Box on the "Standard" rear rack? Any issues with that? Thanks in advance.

Welcome Duffy. According to the Samurider site, the box is the new version for 2014 and is for "Fits: Honda CB1100/Deluxe/EX -2014" I don't think you will have a problem, but you can place the box on the rack and look. I took a look at the instructions on the Honda site with them and you should be easily able to see if all is well using the exploded view.

There are a number of people here who have the Honda box, but most likely all or most have the one before yours. Mr. T only lists one that I can find, so personally I think you are good.

A word on the One-Key cylinder. You get one chance to not mess it up. We have a How to with translated Honda instructions and pictures in the How-To section. I've done 2. Its easy. But read the instructions on it first and be sure it is right before locking it in the cylinder.

Welcome Duffy, enjoy your CB1100!Biker Thanks for the warm reception. I have had a hard time joining the CB1100 Owners club. After looking for a Candy Red model, I finally located one locally which was the last one in the state, and looks to be the last one between here and Texas. I was blown away during the test ride. It was like going from my Honda CM250 to my Suzuki GS650G 32 years ago. This time coming from my very pampered Naked GL500. I had no idea a bike could be that smooth and powerful, and yet look so "right." Anyway, very glad to have gotten the last new one around these parts. You all have been a wealth of information on the bike. Thanks and Cheers! Duffy

Thanks Randy B. Looks great on your 2013. Good to know all the parts go together! Received my shipment from Webike yesterday, and took less than 1 week to ship. Very reasonable on the prices as well. All in, was about $450 for the 2013 rack, top box, mounting plate, and "one key" lock cylinder. Shipping was free.

Thanks also to Popgun for the link to setting the tumblers for the lock cylinder. My Japanese is not so good!

Received the Top Box and carrier, and i'm a bit disappointed. The 2013 rear carrier went on perfectly. However, zero instructions with the Top Box and Mounting Plate, and a bunch of bits for putting the latch on the box, lock assembly on the box, and Mounting Plate on Carrier.

Problem is, the steel fabricated mounting plate (which attaches to the carrier), does not line up in any respect with the 2013 rear carrier. The Plastic Top Box "base" (to which the top box is secured), cannot be directly mounted to the 2013 rear carrier. So a couple of questions:

(1) The Honda OEM Top Box and Mounting hardware I received looks to be designed to fit the 2014 rear carrier only. So is there a steel plate sold which is supposed to mount to the 2013 carrier?

(2) Randy B: Did you mount your Top Box on a 2014 rear carrier, or a 2013 like mine? If your's is also a 2013 rear carrier, how did you go about customizing the steel mounting plate so that it could be secured to the rear carrier?

(3) If no steel mounting plate exists which is meant to fit the 2013 rear carrier, I'm thinking about making one out of "Starboard"-type composite lumber. This I can make with woodworking tools, and then bolt the plastic Top Box "base" to it. Any thoughts on this?

(4) Finally, anyone have the assembly instructions for the Honda OEM Top Box? I've done an internet search, but can't seem to find them.

Thanks in advance for any advice you have.

Duffy

Are on this site: http://cssportal.css-club.net/honda/MCA/TERMS010.aspx

for some reason this link doesn't always work right for people. If it comes up with a page that says something like timed out or some such, look at the top to the right and click on TOP and it will go to the page that lets you in.

Thanks Popgun. That was very useful. Seems I misunderstood two important facts in researching the purchase of rear carrier and Honda OEM Top Box. (1) the fact that the 2013 rear carrier will not fit the 2014 CB1100, and (2) the requirement that the OEM Top Box and Mounting Base/Plate are designed only to fit on the 2014 carrier.

What escaped me was that the 2014 rear carrier WILL fit on the 2013, but not vice versa. Doh!

So I have this nice looking 2013 rear carrier on the bike, but will have to fabricate a base plate to fit on the rack. The mounting holes on the 2013 rear carrier aren't even close to those on the steel mounting plate for the Top Box, and the steel mounting plate can't simply be drilled so it will line up with those holes.

To avoid my mistake, if you own a 2013 CB1100 and want to purchase the Honda OEM Top Box from our Japanese friends, you need to purchase the 2014 ("N40"), instead of 2013 ("J20") rear carrier.

I think Mr. T avoids this problem by selling only the "package" including Top Box and rear carrier. When ordering from Webike, you can order these parts separately, and I thought (wrongly) I had to order the 2013 rack.

Lesson learned...

Duffy
