Hello, I'm Fleetwood, just bought my new 2013 CB1100 a week before Christmas lol but I wanted to ask a question about my oil. The bike still has the original oil in it, and I was wondering if it was break in oil and if it need to be changed sooner than the interval specified in the owners manual? Would it hurt to change the oil at 1000 miles? Thank you for any info

there is no such thing as break-in oil. Manual says change first oil at 600 miles, change oil no later than 600 miles.

Alrighty, I must have read over that by mistake. I had seen where it said to change at 4000 miles and I was like that's long! Haha I see the 600 mile interval now. I feel better. If it was 4000 miles for the fist change I was going to do it at 1000. I use to own a 250 rebel and I changed the oil every 1000 miles because it didn't have an oil filter, so 4000 was an eye opener lol

That used to not be true, but these days that's not the case. Break in oil will have a higher content of ZDDP (read ZINC + some other additives) in it to help with cam shaft break in. Older oils made even 5-7 years ago had much higher amounts of this compound in them to help reduce wear, but it was found that is contributed to high emissions and thus was mandated to be removed because most vehicles use a roller type camshaft and followers/lifters and as such do not require it in such high concentrations to reduce wear effectively.

So I would change your oil as close to the 600 mile mark as you can. Going over by a little won't really hurt anything, but don't wait too long.

I'll take the bait.
Do new CB1100's come filled with break in oil or not?
Regardless I rode a little bit heavy handed and changed oil at 70 miles and at 800 miles.

+1, I did the same. I was glad too, my 1st change the oil was nasty looking.

When I mentioned to my dealer I was going to switch to FullSynthetic, he did say make sure I leave the normal/original oil in for the first 600 miles, then switch to Full Syn, makes sense.

Next time I'm at the dealer I'll ask because I've wondered the same thing for years. Personally, I doubt that they use any kind of special oil.

Way back in the day when I worked at a dealership we picked up a cheap purple oil for break in. This was in the early 80's. Nothing special, just a good cheap oil that was going to be tossed in a few hundred miles then a better* oil put in. Back then we knew enough about synthetic and syn-blends that they did not allow parts to properly break in/seat in so you wanted to avoid them for the break in period.
*Better oil as defined by us or the owner of the bike.

The first change usually looks pretty bad, even after just a few hundred miles. They use a few types of assembly greases when building the engine and tranny. Those greases get washed into the oil when the bike is run and generally turn the oil a dark brown or black within the first hundred miles.
