Rubber armored front sprocket.

Gentlemen,

A few days ago I finally got around to putting on my 19 tooth front sprocket. When I got the inner case cover off to reveal the stock 18 tooth sprocket I saw that it looked completely different than the 19 tooth replacement. The stock front sprocket is very heavy, thick, and has a lot of rubber armoring on both the inside and outside surfaces. I assume that rubber armoring is to dampen vibration but I'm not sure. Is this correct? I can't imagine why Honda would make this part rubber armored without a reason. Perhaps the edges of the chain touch down on the rubber edge and it calms down vibration there.

The new 19 tooth sprocket fits and works perfectly BUT, the bike does seem to vibrate a bit more despite the lower RPM's. Is this possible or is it all in my head? Has anybody else that has made this switch experienced this? All the best.

The rubber is there to quiet the chain noise, but I honestly did not notice a difference on mine noise-wise, or harshness wise.

My Yamaha FZ-1's sprocket was like that as well, and the aftermarket replacement was not. I never noticed the difference in noise or vibes either.

I changed my front sprocket to a 19 tooth one as well. My stock one didn't have any rubber on it.
I haven't noticed any more or less vibrations since changing them out. I do like the lower rpms at speed though.

Is your bike a 2013 or a 2014? Seems odd that different front sprockets would be used.

In the part fiche, the '13 and '14 are shown having 18 teeth, but the part numbers are different.

'14 is 23801-MGC-N20

'13 is 23801-MAZ-000

It is a possibility that the sprockets are, in fact, identical and there has been a part number revision. If both models run a 530 (?) chain then it must be so.

That may be, I don't know. Usually on the 2 parts sites I look at, if there is a number change, the old number is lined out and the new number beside it. In red I think.

Maybe its just one has rubber and one doesn't?

I'm betting the 13 had rubber and the 14 doesn't. They took it off and saved it to keep up with the totally unexpected demand for RLETs.
