Most of the old VW Beetles too. Just a screen. And you couldn't kill those engines. Altho my wife did kill one years ago when trying to find its top speed on the highway. She found out it didn't like 80+ MPH for an extended time.

I remember those POS "filters." The screen looked like chicken wire. Then again, we could pull the engine and rebuild it in an afternoon with a Crescent wrench, hammer, and screwdriver...and frequently did.

That's about it. My friends and I used to build Baja Bugs in high school. Our record was 25 min. to pull the engine, slide a new clutch in and put the engine back in (we went through a lot of clutches in the desert hills).

If that many...a fuel line, a few wires, the air ducts. The neighbor had a barn with an overhead block and tackle. A couple milk crates under the engine, disconnect everything, then lift the back of the car up and slide the engine out from underneath. Me and the neighbor kid had a lot of fun messing around with those old VeeDubs.

The friend that was supposed to help me that day didn't show. I jacked the back of the Bug way up, and slid my little red wagon under the engine. The kid's wagons were all metal back then. I had it passed down to me from my cousin, who is now 72 yrs old. That wagon is still usable, quite rusty though, and sits behind my garage.

Anyways, I unbolted the engine and let it gently down onto the wagon, then jacked the car up higher, and rolled wagon and engine out. I lifted the engine out, placed it on the floor and lifted the new engine onto the wagon and did everything in reverse. Voila! One-man engine change, no pulleys, no lifts.

Anytime I can make the world a better place BTW, I like beef, lamb, and even a good veggie burger. Turkey is a little too bland.

You might ask yourself if I'm serious but, I'm really into saving money. I understand the innate drive to find the lowest price on anything and everything I'm buying. I think for me, it's probably a genetic mutation but I really don't care. I'm self insured, so I have a system where I get at least 3 prices for everything including medical and dental costs for me, my current wife, our 6 kids and the 4 kids I have between 2 ex-wives. You can see why I need to be thrifty. I recently bargained for a colonoscopy and an endoscopy and got $18.53 off the combined price because I got both on the same visit. It's easy to save money, all you have to do is ask! Sure, it takes a heck of a lot of time, but at least I know I've gotten the best price. Out on the bike, I drive all around the county til I find the lowest gas price. The way I figure it, if I save $.05 per gallon, I've saved $.25 or $.30 and as much as I ride, the savings can add up fast! We change the oil and filter about 3 times a year and if we can save $5.00 each time, well, you do the math! I really, really wanted a total frame off fully rebuilt and restored vintage CB750 but I settled on just riding my sons CB11. The best money saving deal yet! But, satirically speaking, that's probably just me. To each his own, I say.
