Gear Indicator Install
#51
You poor things. Move down under and we'll help you with things like translations and conversions.

The video is about calibrating the thing once you've got it plugged in. I don't think you have to do all that heroic stuff with the throttle. Just put the bike on the centre stand, put it in gear, let out the clutch and, when the indicator registers, change gear. When you get to 5 (for those of us with early models) you're done.

I wasn't asleep Ferret, although I should have been. I was lying in bed listening to the remnants of tropical cyclone Marcia passing by.

It's stopped raining for the moment (we've had 370mm or 14.6 inches of the stuff in the past 2 days) so I'll go and snap some photos of how to install the GPDS-H01 and post them a wee bit later for you.

Because I think you all need the practice, this time I'll skip all the hard work I usually do to make sure the pictures are correctly oriented for Northern Hemisphere folk. Give you something to do in the long, snowy days! Beer

Undecider, when are you planning to visit Down Under, or is it yet to be decided? Tongue

Holy smokes Cormanus, 15 inches of rain in 2 days would cause serious flooding here. Is your soil sandy to absorb it?

So...are you saying that, if a feller wanted, he could continue the calibration process to show a 6th gear on the indicator even though he's only got a 5 speed? If so, that's reason enough for me to buy this thing!

ES,

It doesn't work that way unless you install the '14 cover on your '13. That's how you make our bikes a 6 speed. Rolleyes
Much cheaper than Ferret's method of buying a new motorcycleTongue

Sorry about the suspense, fellas. Bit busy with other things. I've just taken some photos and will load and annotate them later in the day. I hope.

Now ...

1. Ferret—No. There is quite bad flash flooding in low lying areas, although it drains away quite quickly. In many places where it is a relatively common occurrence, it causes little damage as there is no housing or other development.

2. ES—I bought the indicator precisely to get the sixth gear. So far, I haven't found the trick. Could it be that popgun is right? Or am I not holding my mouth properly?

3. Popgun—I hope you're not right, but see 2 above.

Here's the indicator. It attaches with very strong double-sided tape.

Run the cable under the tank to the left-hand side of the bike. Remove the left side cover.

There's a rack of three harnesses. The bottom one is red. You can see the bit of the red plug that remains in this photo.

The OEM harnesses slide onto the rack from the back—i.e. to take it off, slide it backwards. This not-very-good photo shows the bit that slides on.

The next photo's even worse. Sorry. But it does show the OEM unit intact. I'd have expected to have to push the lever indicated down to release the cap. Instead, pull it up and the cap to the left slides off easily. Plug in the gear indicator.

The female part of the OEM unit that hold the harness to the rack is, of course on the cap and is no longer available when you plug in the gear indicator. As you can see, I tied it on to the rack with a cable tie.

Hope that's of some use.

Thanks Cormanus. I have a different model but it connects in the same way. The pictures were very helpful. Maybe the model I have will get me a sixth gear.

A week ago I ordered the same gear indicator Cormanus posted about and I installed it last night. It was an extremely easy install and took very little time. I was able to take the bike out for a short test run today and it worked great. $159 from Amazon.

I don't know about other gear indicators but this one is very "plug and play" as the phrase goes. I would suggest this gear indicator to anyone with a 2013.

How about photos and the details so others can order?
