Oil filter K&N vs Honda
#21
To your point, jtopiso, my wife has a Honda CRV, which uses the standard Honda car filter that many of their vehicles use. From all of my Honda friends and scuttlebutt on the internet, it was learned that Honda switched suppliers for their OEM oil filters a few years ago, and that the newer ones weren't perceived as "as good" as the older ones. A bunch of people started hoarding the one with the older part number (I bought a case...)

Both my Triumph and CB use the same filter. I had a friend who used worked at K&N, so I had a small supply of KN204 filters that I had been using on both of them. When the recall came up, I checked and luckily mine were past the dates of the bad ones and I haven't had any trouble with them. But, I'm on my last two, so back to OEM for me when it's time for my next changes. Ironically, I sold my stash of OEM Honda filters with my Nighthawk 750 a few years ago. Who knew I'd buy another Honda? Smile

I am OEM maintenance parts all the way. The only change I have made is upgrading to Honda HP4S oil at the first oil change. Aside from the Honda engineers knowing more than I do about the required parameters for maintenance items like oil, oil filters, air filters, spark plugs, and hydraulic fluids, I am not about to give Honda or any other manufacturer any wiggle room to say any failure that might occur was due to using what THEY might arbitrarily decide to call a sub standard maintenance part.

Although I would think this critical during the warranty period, Honda does sometimes cover or partially cover legitimate issues out of warranty to maintain their image. Without any real value or performance add realized by using an aftermarket maintenance part, why take the risk when the price difference in parts is relatively small? The only exception I can think of off hand is using a high grade oil in a viscosity range listed as acceptable in the owners or shop manual, but not offered in a Honda oil. My two cents for what it is worth, and certainly not throwing shade at anyone that chooses to go aftermarket.

I use oem but I’m not a zealot about it. I’ve used Purolator before and even the WalMart Supertech (made by Champion) with no ill effects. (I only use Purolator in my cars.). Honda has put some junk vendor parts in their engines before. Just follow a few forums like VFRWorld. Thermostats, stators, R/R just to name a few. So I’m not a blind follower of the “oem or nothing” line. For me, it was just a matter of “oil thread fatigue”. I buy the Honda oil and filter cause it’s just easier than trying to keep up with all that. What’s the best oil? Fresh! What’s the best filter? New!
