My Monolock top case came this afternoon and as noted above, the mounting base is plastic. As ClassicVW said, "thick, very solid, plastic".

Instructions for it are not good. Mostly pictures that are not very clear. I got a lighting kit and the lights have a 3 wire harness. But the box connections only have 2 contacts. The instructions show using a red and black wire. So what is the blue for?

Givi, as noted above, was confused again. Said well, maybe its for running lights. And he was right. Black is ground, red is bright for use as brake lights, blue is dim for running lights. Now if only the box contacts had 3 pin connections...

Well, AFAIK, there's no dual filament or dual LEDs in the Givi lights,so all you will have is brake lights. Was the lighting kit from someplace else?

I'm pretty sure that's right. When I installed the wiring on my Givi case (not on a CB1100) I had to choose which way to wire it...either always-on or as an extra set of brake lights. I chose the latter. I decided people behind me should get as much notice as possible when I'm slowing down.

I recall the leads didn't make a perfect connection in the box when I closed the lid so I had to monkey with the connection, but it has all been working perfectly for a couple years now.

Classic,

Are you asking me? If so, its the Givi option for the box. Doesn't say in the crappy instructions, but you can chose to wire it as running, or brakes.

Now if you are handy, and some knowledge of electricity, you could wire both, but one wire would have to be permanent( or a bayonet connector or something) as the Givi type connections supplied are only 2 terminals.

I did test them with a battery jump box. With +12v on the blue wire, the leds come on dim. Then adding +12v to the red and they go bright.

Or, as Ridem did on the ST, you can hook them up as turn signals.

Like JGran, I'll be wiring mine as brakes for the reason he said. I want to be noticed too!

I have both the Monokey and the Monolock plates. Both are thick, very solid, plastic.
I have both because I originally ordered the wrong plate for my top box and I couldn't do a simple exchange.
Does anyone else think the names are too similar, causing confusion?

The Monokey is the one that I don't need. If anyone needs one, I'll give you a great deal!

Yes.

Yes.
It's the worst pair of confusing names for 2 different products ever !

Second runner up might be as some Bike writer put it:
"The Bridgestone BT54 is just like the BT45 except that the numbers are reversed"

That's why I like the Admore kit better. It has red running lights and amber turn signals.

From what I understand, the stock two-contact Givi connector corrodes or something over time and then your lights blink. The Admore kit comes with a much nicer connector, however, it has to be connected manually (it's a quick-connect, though).

What? When did that happen? Next you'll be telling me Honda's made a new air-cooled in-line 4!

Yeah, I know. Believe me, I looked hard for a four-wire (I needed a separate power line, that I ended up not needing anyway, but a three-wire is just as hard to find) weather-proof contact switch, but couldn't find one.
