To check the oil, according to the manual, bike on center stand, warm the engine and then let it sit for 2 or 3 minutes. Then the oil should be between the lines. It is kind of a pain to really tell if it is right or not. If I do mine like that, and it is at the upper lever after a couple of minutes, later it will be at the top of the window. Yours is showing between the lines, so is good. The ST1300 is the same way and both bikes are a pain to get "right". Others may chime in on this.
When the engine is running you aren't going to see oil in the window.
If you add more, don't add much at one time as it takes a time to raise the level and then bang, too much. Also, you are not going to see oil when you remove the oil fill cap. You can see the distance between the oil fill lines and the oil fill. Man, that would be a LOT of oil. Like a real lot of oil. AND fresh oil can be hard to see in the window if overfilled so be wary.
If you have everything cleaned up, go for a ride and then check to see if you see any leaks.
