LP would it not be saving a lot of work if nicky removed the drain plug by unclipping the metal ring with some pliers and see how much oil has accumilated in there?
If it turns out the drain is not full there is no reason to get into the airbox.
Mine was clear after 40.000 km and he mentioned the oil level was low, not overfilled.
Your advice " what did you do last before the fault appeared " seems a good starting point, we'll see what can be found today, i think although there is not a lot of oil around the filter it could be possible that there was something under the oil seal that made oil seep out over time, just guessing here.
And Nicky paper kitchen towels work great with removing grease and oil from the engine.
