That isn't a surprise. It only shows (and this is bad design I think) when the following conditions are all met at once:
- a service is needed
- the tank is almost empty, and
- your have not selected a trip display (trip-A or trip-B)
In other words I think you could easily miss a "real" service indication.

I could find nothing about a service indicator.

My manual says the following in the neighborhood of the display description: when “dash-dash-dash” is displayed in other cases, go to your dealer for service." But the exact logic beets me. And no mentioning of how to get rid of it.
