Hello cragar854,
I recently changed tires on my '17ex. It had 8500 miles and while the front had some left, the rear was shot. I went through the "which tire w/ tube?" thing as well. Do I buy tires online for better price, or do I let local shop order tires because if I do they lower their install charge?
I decided to go with the latter because I wanted to establish a relationship with a local indy repair shop that was recommended to my by no less than the owner of this forum. I wanted to see how they work, see their shop because I wanted to build some trust when it comes time to have the valves checked.
Here's the breakdown:
1) Tire Change on bike-Includes mount and balance, chain clean and
adjust, brake pad inspection, wheel bearing inspection, tube
replacement, set tire pressure, Dispose of used tire. **mounting and
disposal discount applies if tires are purchased through us**** ($88)
2) Tubes, fornt/rear: $32
3) Avon Roadrunner tires $323
Total: $443
NOTE: I could have purchased the same tires for about $240 online, but then the shop would have charged me more for the install; in the end, it would have been nearly the same price, so why not let the shop order the tires for me so I wouldn't have to ride there with tires?
They did the job in just under 2 hours as I waited, returned the two used tubes to me at my request so that I have a spare. Chain was cleaned and oiled, very nice experience, and they really liked the bike. The Honda dealers are farther away and a bit of a hassle to get to.
The Avons seem to grip just fine, bike feels like new again.
Good luck!
