Vfrpaul, interesting possibilities. Would what you're describing cause other issues as well--like sticking in one position, or one fork compressing and the other not?
If you bought the bike used it could be a number of things, check for any scratches on the clutch and brake levers or any where else on the bike for signs it may have been down.
