It's been my experience after owning several Honda's (VFR700, VFR800, ST1100, ST1300, another VFR800, etc.) with bucket/shim style valve trains that they rarely need to have a shim replaced. I check mine at 20K intervals usually and have only pulled a cam one time to replace a shim, and even then it really did not need a new shim as it was just at one end of the tolerance. My ST1100 has 78K on it when I sold it and the valves never went out of spec form mile 1K.
