Wow, started reading this and realized I have K&N KN204 filters on both my CB and my Bonneville. Have a friend who used to work there, so I have a few left on my shelf, and hadn't heard about the problems with them.
I downloaded the information about K&N's recall on this filter: https://www.knfilters.com/recallkn204
and will be checking my date codes tonight! Looks like the bad ones were made during 2006.
Funny thing is, I had half a case of the Honda OEM filters left over from my last Nighthawk, which I sold in 2014. I sold the filters not too long ago, not realizing I'd be buying another Honda just a few months later.
