Yeah, agreed, a complete disregard and a violation. This is almost like vandalism, which is painful.

Must be punks who don't have enough coin to load the bike into a truck.

What's next to "protect" your ride?

If you had the opportunity to know someone was tampering with your ride 25 seconds into it, what would you have done next?

I'm really not sure about how to protect it. I live in an apartment building with a pretty secure gate/garage situation. There are other motorcycles in the garage - Ducati Scrambler, Africa Twin, Triumphs, etc... and those riders haven't seen anything like this. The shop guys I talked with definitely see this as attempted theft, so I've filed a police report and insurance claim so now it's in their hands. (so technically this thread doesn't belong in mech&tech anymore)

Regarding opportunity - I live in Texas. We are allowed to defend our property and ourselves with lethal force. So I'd probably wave a pistol around in a threatening manner or take out his/her kneecap.

In the early 60s I had a copper device in my wallet that could be used to start my BSA Lightning if I misplaced my key. Only needed it once when an angry girlfriend tossed my key over the fence into her back yard. Picked up my key from her mother the next day, and started dating one of her girlfriends.

These bikes have a simple 2-wire ignition switch. Surprised the thief couldn't get it started. Of course, he would also have to defeat the fork lock.

If you don't have a U-lock or heavy chain, that may be a good deterrent for a possible next time. Even a cover will help deter. Maybe the old hidden toggle switch from VW Bug days. Thieves are usually lazy and will look for something easier.

That will probably be my plan - U-lock or chain plus a cover. If I could roll her into my apartment I'd totally do that.

In my case I can place it under the seat, or in a locked top box. You may have a better approach.

The moment the bike is moved, jarred, etc. I will get a notification about 25 seconds later. Unfortunately, it won't stop cut wires or other vandalism acts.
