These bikes have a simple 2-wire ignition switch. Surprised the thief couldn't get it started. Of course, he would also have to defeat the fork lock.
If you don't have a U-lock or heavy chain, that may be a good deterrent for a possible next time. Even a cover will help deter. Maybe the old hidden toggle switch from VW Bug days. Thieves are usually lazy and will look for something easier.
