Tire Options for our CB1100
Hello cragar854,

I recently changed tires on my '17ex. It had 8500 miles and while the front had some left, the rear was shot. I went through the "which tire w/ tube?" thing as well. Do I buy tires online for better price, or do I let local shop order tires because if I do they lower their install charge?

I decided to go with the latter because I wanted to establish a relationship with a local indy repair shop that was recommended to my by no less than the owner of this forum. I wanted to see how they work, see their shop because I wanted to build some trust when it comes time to have the valves checked.

Here's the breakdown:

1) Tire Change on bike-Includes mount and balance, chain clean and
adjust, brake pad inspection, wheel bearing inspection, tube
replacement, set tire pressure, Dispose of used tire. **mounting and
disposal discount applies if tires are purchased through us**** ($88)

2) Tubes, fornt/rear: $32

3) Avon Roadrunner tires $323

Total: $443

NOTE: I could have purchased the same tires for about $240 online, but then the shop would have charged me more for the install; in the end, it would have been nearly the same price, so why not let the shop order the tires for me so I wouldn't have to ride there with tires?

They did the job in just under 2 hours as I waited, returned the two used tubes to me at my request so that I have a spare. Chain was cleaned and oiled, very nice experience, and they really liked the bike. The Honda dealers are farther away and a bit of a hassle to get to.

The Avons seem to grip just fine, bike feels like new again.

Good luck!

Yes, I have made 10.000 Km with the Bridegestones BT016 150/70 and 110/80, and still could make 2.000 more with safety. Previously I used the original Dunlops Sport touring and after that 2 sets of Dunlop Roadsmart III, I can get 20.000 Km out of them both. Now that I tried these BT016 which are quite cheap I couldn't go back to the Dunlops. Usually I ride with a passenger so I am surprised how many kilometers I can get out of them, the comfort and the grip. I will install a new set of them next year.

You must have gotten the 160/60ZR18 size in the rear, correct? Isn't that tire a bit too wide for the CB1100 4.0" rim width?

How about the front -- did you stay with 110/80R18 or change to a 120/70R18?

Please let me know your thoughts on the ride and handling with your new rubber. Thanks.

81spartan, welcome to the forum. Please introduce yourself in the New Members section sometime.

Because of the limited tyre options available for the CB1100, many of us have used Michelin PR3s which only have a 160/60 rear option. It is bigger than recommended, but none of us have had problems. Likewise with the Angel GT. I’ve always stuck with the 110/80 front but I think there was a problem getting them in the US and so folks have used the 120/70 and been very happy with that option.

Cormanus, when I got the Angle GTs I was able to get the 110/80 front and the rear I had to go with the 160/60. That was July ‘19.

I’m happy with the setup, but would have gone with the 120 on the front if I would have had too.

Hey there Speed,
great to read that you're happy with the performance of the BT016. 10,000 - 12,000 km sounds very good from such a sporty tyre. I may try a set of these next summer if they're available in Aus. Hope you don't mind sharing a bit more your experience Smile
Does your riding include plenty of winding European roads under the warm summer sun? yes, I am jealous! Are you riding on 18" rims and what are your observations of any differences with the 150 vs 140 rear? What tyre pressures have you found work best for you? Any comment about how they 'feel' compared to the original Dunlops?
Thank you Speed.

Popgun, I think the 110/80 was not available in the PR3—redbirds, I think, went with the 120 because he couldn't get the 110. I've not heard of people using Angel GTs in 120.
