Changing the rear wheel on the shaft drive can be so easy. Probably the best argument for shaft; and I've had both standard swing arm and single sided swing arm shaft drives. Although the singe sided did not have a center stand and I had to go with an after market stand for shop use.

Thanks for bringing that point up Masked One, that is a very good one.

Yesterday there was the big classic bike event, (mostly parts of classic bikes) I went they hold twice a year, once in February and once in October.

Yesterday Triumph showcased their retro models...dealer there said they Scrambler will be the last aircooled they sell because of the Euro emission rules...

So it seems the CB1100 and Yamaha XJR are the last air cooled bikes sold new?

Anyhow, I wanted to share this.
The older Bonneville model converted to a belt drive system! Thumbs Up
I actually think it looks rather good on the bike.

That bike was also modified with other aftermarket parts and looked sweet as heck,
6 piston front brake caliper, and look at those Alpina spoke wheels.

When looking at both air cooled twin cilinder engines, I noticed how 'think' the fins were and realised I was saying to myself: nothing beats the good 'old' 4 cilinder from Big Red Cool

I didnt like the look of the new and very powerful Thruxton at all.
And the tank of the underpowered Street Twin look so tiny, I had to laugh thinking it was made for children.

While the new retro Triumphs meet emission rules and have all kinds of high tech gadgets, purely on the looks department they went a big step back, imo.

At the risk of opening a can of worms, I'd suggest that all bikes are air-cooled, even if they're full of coolant and have a water pump and radiator. Without air flowing through the radiator, the engine would overheat. Semantics, I guess.

Not to defend the new Street Twin, but the gas tank holds 3.2 gallons and the bike reportedly gets 70 mpg. That's a similar range as the CB.

That belt conversion is really cool. I always got put off by them because I immediately think of having the giant belt and tensioner system like a Harley (which looks good on such a big bike), but this actually doesn't look at all put of place on a smaller bike.

don't you need specialized equipment to set the tension on a belt drive? (That's what the dealer told me when I bought my 94 Sporty)

Just a belt tension gauge, much like the ones used to test/set tension on automotive belts. About the only time you'll use it is after the back wheel has been off. Belts generally don't need periodic tension adjustments like chains. Your rear tire will wear out long before the belt needs adjustment.

Back when I was a collector of Kaw 750 twins, I used to work on my buddy's rare '83 belt drive model. I was amazed at how well the belt held up. Last time I saw it, it was 15 yrs. old with about 60k miles and still on the original belt.

A belt drive on any bike with more than a few inches of rear suspension travel would do best with a spring tension pulley I think as the Buell had. That would eliminate the need for any special tension set tool and would make it possible to fix the rear axle position

First drive shaft on a Kawasaki was the KZ1000E1 in 1979. They still use many if not most of the components. Turning crank power is done with 45 degree gears called bevel gears. They almost NEVER wear out; only maintenance are seals which are kind of a pain and something you would normally have a shop do. I have the tools to do Kaw shaft seals. This is a pic of a 79 KZ1000E shafty I rebuilt from the ground up...
