Chain and sprocket replacement interval
#1
Apologies if this has already been discussed, but for those who have replaced their chain and sprockets due to normal wear and tear (and not simply because you wanted to change the gearing),

- How many miles did you get from your original chain and sprockets?
- Did you replace the parts with OE Honda parts? If not, why not? Cost? Perceived quality? Availability?

I think Ptero and Sanoke have both replaced chain and sprockets, but Ptero no longer posts.

Add Cormanus to the list, please.

I had my chain and sprockets replaced at the 48,000 km (30,000 mile) service.

Is it embarrassing to admit I can't tell from the invoice whether they used OEM parts? They seem OK, though.

Should be able to look at the chain...it's probably stamped DID if OEM ([url=http://www.did-daido.co.jp/en/]Daido Kogyo Co. Ltd)? And hopefully the new master linked is riveted not clipped.

Chain with riveted master link included: Honda P/N 40540-MBR-003

Riveted master link only: Honda P/N 40545-MBR-003 or 40545-MBB-005

48,000 km / 30,000 mi is good life out of the chain, well done.

I did my chain at about 26,000 miles. Wasn't particularly stretched, but had a few links that tended to stick a bit. I also replaced both sprockets, but I couldn't detect wear on either. DID chain, but sprockets were steel aftermarket, due to availability more than anything.

Mate, it's 10,000 kms old now and is buried under such a wad of grease and dirt, I'm doing well to find it and add more oil, let alone read anything.

But thanks for the suggestion. Beer

Rolls. That is one CLEAN bike in your pic. Next time you're rolling through Utah I need you to stop by and detail my CB. BBQ and single malt are on on me.

I've seen surgical facilities that aren't that sanitary! Wow that is one clean machine, Rolls!

I love this place. Where else does a thread on chain/sprocket wear and replacement turn into a discussion of BBQ and spirits by post 8?

BTW, I'm not close to replacing the chain/sprocks yet, but my VFR, which probably worked the chain a little harder than the CB, went 28k mi on the oem and was still going strong when I replaced it. Went with DID X-ring and aftermarket sprockets at the sprocket center (sprocketcenter.com). They will kit you out with the whole set up if you dial in your bike specs.
