Since you mentioned "trickle chargers" I have a question, will leaving a good quality intelligent charger hooked up continuously to a lead acid battery in a seldom ridden motorcycle shorten its life appreciably?
Is it better to just hook up the battery tender the night before you hope to ride that bike?

Much better to leave the bike constantly on a "smart" charger. A good one will not harm the battery at all. Allowing it to drain over time will cause it to fail. These days, just make sure it is a true "intelligent" charger that will just provide a regulated float charge. I really like the [url=https://www.amazon.com/NOCO-G750-UltraSafe-Battery-Charger/dp/B004LX3AS6/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1477363244&sr=1-5&keywords=smart+battery+charger]NOCO Genius series, but they use different type of connector. They make an adapter to the usual two-prong DC connector, though. They come in 750 and 1100 mA sizes.

Battery Tender is another good brand.
