New Key for 2017 CB1100EX

Hi everyone, still new to this Forum, and I need some help, again. When I bought my 2017 CB1100 in January, it came with only one key. I read the earlier forum from the member in Germany with the same issue. If I understand correctly, our USA bikes are just sidewinder keys, without any kind of chip or programming. Does anyone know how to get one made. I am not having any luck with key makers on Ebay, and before you laugh, they supplied me with 2 good blanks for my 2013 CB1100 for about $10. The hardware store in Sinton, Texas cut them for free! Good luck with that bike, I now have 3 keys, but not so with the EX. Michael

Honda dealers can order the key blank, but generally these keys are cut by code only, and very, very few Honda car or motorcycle dealers have the specific machine (assuming you have the tag with the 4-digits and barcode on it that came with the key.) If not, check with a competent locksmith to see if it can be copied.

Hi, thanks for the reply. When I bought the bike from a dealer no less, it came with only one key, no manual or key tag. Actually not much, except the bike, with 1200 miles only on it, I could not pass it up. I feel as this is going to be a challenge, but I do not like having only one key.

Before you lose your only key, I would ask the selling dealer if he could contact the original owner, or maybe pass your number to him, and see if by chance they might still have it. The tag would have a letter prefix and 3 numbers as the key code - the bar code itself means nothing now.

I would take a picture of the key cutout - it may be of no use, but the lock set retails for $420, plus labor. Faced with that option, I would take a blank to a locksmith or a friendly machinist, or even cut it yourself with a Dremel or file.

I am not a locksmith, so I am only surmising this. The 2017 key looks like the picture below. Unlike earlier keys that had a single set of tumblers to match the "teeth" pattern on one side, these have an upper and lower set of "teeth" so there are likely upper and lower sets of tumblers. But the picture only shows one side of the key - the other side, separated by a thin wall (the red arrow) looks identical.

If you had a picture of the key, you could trace it on a blank, and cut/grind/mill/file the proper profile all the way across both sides, ignoring the center wall. I think the key would then work, but only when inserted in one orientation - you'd have a 50% chance you put it in right, or otherwise mark the top.
Sound possible? Any thoughts?

When I bought my 2017 I ordered 2 extra keys from my dealer whom could not cut them but a local locksmith had a code cutting machine and no problem cutting the 2017 Honda key.

Houtman, do you remember if they traced it usingyour old key? Seems like they should be able to.

This is very strange that Honda dealer cannot retrieve the key code.
In automotive (brand, I worked for), all I need is the VIN to get particular key code within several seconds, done.
I had my bikes's regular/teeth pattern key cut by mobile Car Keys Express (Ontario) while at work, C$20.

Yes I brought in the original 2017 key and they used that with a special "code " key cutting machine.

Thanks, that is exactly what my key looks like. When I bought the bike, I spoke to the man that sold it to the dealer, a Triumph/Indian shop, and he said he bought the bike with 500 miles and only one key, no code or manual. I do not have the skill to cut the key, but will ask the hardware store that cut the key for my 2013 CB, if they are open. Here in south Texas, it looks like a ghost town. I will say one thing for this Virus attack. I have not seen the air this clean in a long time!
