Valve clearances
#11
I recall that it changed from 8,000 miles to 12,000 miles from 2017 onwards.

Does anybody know if the valve clearances are the same for the cb1100ex (2017 onwards) and the older model.
Mine is coming up to the 8000 miles mark now and looking at the forum information it looks alot harder than on my bandit 600. As there is no workshop manual for this bike I would be greatful for any information.

Mike,

For Honda CB1100 2013-2016
Valve clearance;
IN 0.15 ± 0.03 (0.006 ± 0.001)
EX 0.28 ± 0.03 (0.011 ± 0.001)

Email sent to a Honda motorcycle dealer:
Can you please confirm if for the 2017 CB1100 and RS valve clearance is identical.

Hi Peter
Yes, all the 2017 models have the same clearance specs as the 2013-2016

Hope this clarifies your question

I have a 2017MY too but unfortunately I don't have those values, sorry. The first valve service is not due until 12K miles though so I would leave it until you get closer.

My bike manual states valve clearance checks every 8000 miles that's UK miles not kilometres.sorry for that but we also drive on the left Cool

Somewhere in this forum a 2017 owner posted pics of his service schedule from his manual with 12K miles in it, found it here:

It just occurred to me that Honda puts the valve spec (and some other tech info) on a black label affixed to the top of the rear fender. You can see it by removing the seat.

Let us know f the clearance spec is the same. The interval will not be listed there, though.

I'm not sure if the valve clearances changed but they did alter the camshaft lobes for this new "off-set" burble in the 2017 change.

No they didn't. The cams are the same on ALL modern CB1100

Sorry if I am mistaken but this review of the new 20117 release models led me to believe otherwise. I can't see how Honda would of managed this without mechanically changing the camshaft.

First there’s that glorious engine. The need to comply with Euro4 prompted changes in itself but Honda has also taken the opportunity to enhance the character of the motor with revised valve timing on two of the four cylinders to produce a more ‘curdle-ly’ sensation – particularly at higher revs.

That seems done and dusted. Many thanks for that feedback Peter. Beer

They are just re-hashing stuff they read from other old articles.

The only changes were the intake snorkel on the airbox, and the exhaust.

Unless all the part # lookup software is wrong..

You seem to be right PowerDubs, Marketeers, their imagination know no bounds. The Honda guys have emphasised this "always there" feature on journalists and they have completely got the wrong end of the stick. The journalists are getting this mixed up with cam timing. Here is another making the same assertion that the "cam timing" is altered.

Meanwhile, the 88bhp motor in both CBs has an enhanced, offbeat gruff feel and a grumbling exhaust note. It comes from alternate cam timing; cylinders one and two have different timing to three and four (they fire in 1-3-4-2 order) – for no reason than to lend charisma to an otherwise smooth and featureless in-line four power delivery. It certainly works – it’s a bit like the engine’s got a misfire (or as if its carbs need balancing... if it had carbs). The original CB11 in 2013 featured the idea, but the effect is amplified in the EX and RS with tuning to the single intake manifold and exhaust silencers.

The review is at least a little different than the normal stuff and does go into some interesting history of the engine.

(*sigh*) " ... featureless in-line four ... " - That attribute never came to mind every time I mounted the wonderful machine.
