#11
Could be- chassis based as opposed to engine based.

Can’t remember off hand, but I think the valve clearances need checking every 12,000 kms. May be more from 2017 on. There is seldom anything amiss with the clearances until many more kms have been ridden. Unless you have another reason to be concerned about the valve clearances, I wouldn’t be concerned.

I contacted DVLA with this question and they said that if the engine had been changed and they were informed, all that would be on the V5C was the new engine number and the VIN. There would be no info regarding a change of engine. I guess the only way to really know is to contact Honda and ask them which engine number was in the motorcycle when it came off the line.

Switched to SC78 with the 2017 updates.

Switched to SC78 with the 2017 updates. The VIN has SC78 in it but the engine is SC65E

Ah ... wrong again. I knew there was somewhere that had picked up SC78 in the VIN. I thought it was the UK and Europe, but your reference to the engine number threw me. I guess it makes sense. Honda sees the 2017 and on CB1100 as a new bike but with the same engine that powered the earlier mode. It doesn't explain why Honda has stuck with SC65 in North American VINs.

The engine does not have to be re-certified for possible newer emissions regulations if it is not changed internally, hence the continuation of the engine numbers.

Older bikes like XR650L and DR650 have lived long lives because of that.

Update when i spoke to the DVLA the other day about another matter I brought this up and the lady said she could find no signs that the engine had been changed, ie photos sent in etc, which I presume is part of the process in registering a change of engine. Honda have also got back to me and said the following

"Please be kindly advised that as per our established procedures we would only be able to confirm whether the engine number is original or not. If you wish for us to do that, please provide us with the current engine number of the vehicle."

Hopefully I'm getting somewhere. The reasons I wanted to know were 1/ the chainguard is scuffed at the front edge leading me to suspect it has made contact or possibly come off (I'm thinking that could have caused a lot of damage) 2/ More chain wear than i would expect, for example there is a tight spot already 3/ evidence of the exhaust flange nuts having a spanner on them and 4/ (this is covered elsewhere) ticking (valve noise) when warming up. The bike only had 2000 on it when i bought it. Apart from those things I have had no issues with it only the oil darkening a little quicker than i expected, after 3-5 hundred miles.

Update Honda came back with "The engine is original" Anyway went for it's MOT yesterday, passed with no advisories, mechanic happy with chain and bike overall so I guess I'm just paranoid. Will get on with enjoying riding it from now on.
