When I encountered the distracted Tesla driver at Whole Foods, my muffler was scratched. Although the scratches were visible only if someone focused intently on the spot in daylight, I could not let it go. I spent $700 USD on a new muffler and rationalized my excessive behavior by telling myself I now had a spare in case of another mishap. 

After installing the new muffler, I decided to explore adding a muffler slider to protect against future falls and mishaps, whether caused by others or by me. I started my research on our Forum. I noticed that many of our fellow members have muffler sliders that look great. That was comforting because I did not want to break the motorcycle's clean lines.

But I needed to better understand the engineering and materials that distinguish high-quality muffler sliders from those that might do more harm than good during a slide or fall. I was truly clueless about how to choose something that would look nice and protect one of my favorite parts of my motorcycle.

The analysis became even more challenging when I realized I could not mount the muffler slider directly to the motorcycle frame of my 2017 CB1100EX the same way I mounted the SW-Motech crash bars that had protected the engine and my legs so well. I had to find a “Goldilocks’ Solution” that would protect in a minor event but yield somewhat during a high-speed slide, because I was mounting them to the very thing I wanted to protect: the muffler!

I ultimately decided that the slider’s base must be relatively wide and made of lightweight yet rigid machined aluminum with an anodized finish to improve wear resistance. I wanted the metal to be strong enough not to collapse if I dropped the motorcycle or laid it down “gently,” but not so rigid that it could cause the motorcycle to flip during a high-speed slide. I wanted to pair the base with a slightly tapered, replaceable DURACON puck. From my experience in the energy industry, I knew that DURACON is a very hard, rigid thermoplastic with excellent abrasion resistance, a low coefficient of friction (so it slides on pavement rather than catching), and good dimensional stability. It also withstands repeated impacts reasonably well without shattering the way some harder plastics might.

I purchased exhaust sliders made by World Walk, which is a legitimate Japanese motorcycle accessories company, though it's a relatively small, niche brand compared to names like R&G or Evotech. The custom-made part was designed specifically for a CB1100EX:

World Walk uses Webike as a worldwide distribution partner.  I placed my order on a Tuesday afternoon, and the parts were delivered to my office on Friday morning. Please see the following pictures if you, too, are looking to protect your mufflers. I will document the actual install in a “How-To” thread next week. The install was relatively easy, but like all aftermarket parts, it required some creativity. I bought two sets: one to install on the motorcycle and another as a backup. I spent $60 USD per slider set and another $60 USD for shipping. No tariff was paid.

I welcome your comments about how they look, and if you have a better option, I would greatly appreciate the benefit of your experience on how I can protect my beloved motorcycle. As you may have noticed, I am always willing to add something to my ever-growing collection of spare parts! David

When I was 13 years old, my parents divorced. A difficult life for the family was made more so. To help out, I asked the owner of the Texaco Gas Station near our house if I could work for him. He paid me a $1 per hour to pump gas, clean windows, detail cars, and change tires. He told me years later that he hired me because I was an altar boy and the only kid in the neighborhood who could add and subtract in his head. Apparently, my predecessors had trouble getting the right amount of money into the cash register for various reasons.

I gave the money I made at the Texaco to my Mother to help out. It was not much, but it was all that I could do. My father was an Air Force Master Sergeant. We lived in a blue-collar neighborhood where the Dads were either in the military or worked at the General Motors plant. The Mothers ran everything, usually had more than three kids, and always had plenty of work. People sat on the front porch when the weather was nice and talked. Kids knew to come home when the street lights turned on.

My Mother knew I missed my father. She also knew I was fixated on a motorcycle for sale across the street. It was a 1973 Yamaha 100 MX dirt bike. Every day when I walked home from work, I would look at it.

One day, she handed me an envelope, and in it was every dollar I had given her. She told me in her lovely French accent to go across the street and buy that "motorcycle thing" and "to be careful riding it."

I remember looking at the envelope and her. I told her these five things:

I loved her with all my heart and soul
I would always work hard and never honte à la famille (bring shame to the family)
I would do whatever was necessary to help her and my brothers for the rest of my life, just like she helped me
I would follow the teachings of the Holy Church and find a way to go to college so I could make more money
I would find mentors who could teach me what I needed to know about riding and maintaining motorcycles

That last commitment is what led me to the CB1100 Forum. 49 years later, I have honored each commitment.

Can someone tell me how the clock retains its memory when the ignition is switched off?

My clock has started resetting to 1:00 after the ignition has been off for a day or so. It's not lack of charge in the battery as I've just installed a new one which is showing 12.9v on the meter. Earlier in the year I had the instruments off the bike as ants had somehow nested in there, but the other instruments are working fine, so I find it hard to believe there's a poor connection.

Any thoughts would be very welcome.

I’m very happy to announce another road trip to North America—this time to Canada.

The idea actually came from Peter Baron after I mentioned some concerns about visiting the U.S. at the moment (reasons beyond the scope of this forum). He kindly invited me to join him on a road trip from Toronto to the Atlantic Ocean—just think about that! It’s amazing how this forum connects real people in real life. You really do meet the nicest people on a Honda!
After a bit of planning, we found a two-week window at the end of June. 

So far, I’ve:

• applied for an eTA
  
• booked my flight from Germany to Toronto
  
• put down a deposit on a rental bike in Toronto—a BMW F750GS

A year ago today, we set up the CB1100 Community Forum and ported the technical threads and posts from its predecessor, the CB1100 Forum.

At the time, we wanted to build on the incredible foundation of cb1100forum.com. Guth, The Ferrett, Cormanus, and others recognized how special the CB1100 is and the unique people who ride them. Their timing was perfect, and the results speak for themselves: 6,900+ users with over 300,000 posts.

12 years later, I joined the party. Things were very different. Depending on who you ask, Euro 5, an aging motorcycle demographic, the market’s shift toward lighter, adventure-touring motorcycles, and more led Honda to end production of the CB1100. I knew then and know now that the CB1100 (all flavors and years) will become more important with each passing year. Mitsuyoshi Kohama’s vision for a modern interpretation of an air-cooled inline-four that shared but was not limited by the heritage of its predecessors was perfect. Hirofumi Fukunaga, Shunji Yokokawa, and Mitsunobu Imada provided the drive and the details that ultimately led to the wonderful motorcycle I am about to ride this afternoon.

The missing piece was an active, supported Forum that would enable enthusiasts to preserve and protect the CB1100. Over the past year, 150 people registered on our Forum, 316 Threads have been created, and 3,439 Posts have been shared. The focus may have shifted toward maintenance, preservation, and riding, but the constants are Members' courtesy, sincerity, and decency, as they genuinely care for one another and for motorcycling in general. We are a Community, and, like the motorcycle we love, we are worthy of the energy and effort we spend to remain connected.

Congratulations on a great first year. Rest assured that the investment you have made in this Community will continue to pay dividends for years to come. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of something special. David

Voici mon autre moto, c'est une CB 750 de 2003 que j'ai aussi pas mal modifiée 
selle, capot de selle et feu arrière de 900 bol d'or de 1979, roue arrière de CBR 900, cache latéraux sur mesures, etc......
J'aime beaucoup cette moto mais je préfère conduire la 1100
