Rear Bungee Hook

[Cormanus]

Part number 90127-MCJ-750 is described as "Bolt, Hook, 8 x 42" There are 4 of them that hold the little rail (described as 'garnish') under the rear of the seat.

I use a top box and the rack to which it's attached does not allow the use of the OEM bolt as it's about 17mm too short.

Does anyone have any idea where I might get a longer version of the Bolt, Hook or even a fitting I could put over a similar sized bolt to serve the same purpose?

The rear bolt on the 2017EX (90127-MGC-JB0) is 55mm long, and is threaded about 15mm. I'm not sure if the turn signals still attach the same way; if the grab rails are removed, these may be long enough.

Thanks, pekingduck. That's a thought. The 2011 turn signals attach to the garnish and so I'd have to make other arrangements for them if I took it off. But 55mm may gve me enough length. I'll have another look.

It's also nicely chromed, compared to the other ones. bling!

That’s appealing. My other thought was to buy a bolt with an oversized head and cut a long the of tubing to sit between the edge of the rack and the bold head. It’s really just to stop a bungee slipping off. The Honda ones look good though and the extra bling would be even better.

I had a look and they’re only used in 2017- CBs, which haven’t come near Australia. I suppose I’ll have to get a Honda dealer to get some from Japan.

People commonly refer to these bolts as "Frankenstein Bolts". If all you want is a hook for a bungee cord, then how about getting a longer bolt and putting a nut on it to that the nut can be tightened against the frame (or handle) while allowing the longer bolt to extend out?

[Cormanus]

Thanks Dave. That’s a good thought too. And it’s good to know what people call them so I can search.

Check Bungee mate from CA at http://www.bungeemate.com
I bought a lot of my stuff from them in 2012 , hopefully they are still in business and they have a lot of the things you are looking for.

[Cormanus]

Thank you, Houtman. Looks hopeful.

May these pics help a bit?
Metric thread.

[Cormanus]

Thanks, Peter. I take it picture 2 is the standard bolt 90127-MCJ-750?

[peterbaron]

All these are OEM, were removed due to SW Motech side racks installation.

[Cormanus]

That's great information, Peter, thanks. It tells me the thread length of the OEM bolt is 42 mm which probably means the ones PekingDuck has told me about are 55mm thread length. I just have to work out whether they're long enough and, if they are, see whether a Honda dealer can get them for me.

OK, no problem, the bolt is M8x1.25 mm
Let me know if you need further assistance in this matter.

Do you really need the hook? If you have a rear rack can’t you tie down anything to the rack itself? My rack has some hook points for a cargo net or other lashing.

chync, no I don't REALLY need it, but it would look good and be handy.

pekingduck, thanks. The thread is the same diameter?

The reason I had those bolts was because I had a Nelson-Rigg Seat bag that I had modified to fit securely on my 2013 and 2014 bikes. Originally, the bag's straps were sewn into the outer edges of the bottom, and had plastic clips.

I cut the straps and bolted them to the bag's base, and used metal clips that fully encircle the bolt. I cut eyelets in the loose ends of the strap that went onto the bolts first so the metal buckle didn't rub the chrome grabrail.

On the 2017, the front bolt was too far forward, on the upper shock mount, and had only a 6mm thread. So I replaced it with a bolt, and ordered 2 of the 42mm 2013/2014 bolts. I used some chrome spacers that were about 15mm thick so the hook ends would stick out from under the seat. But the 42mm bolts were still too long - they went into blind holes, so I had to shorten them around 12mm.

Yes, 8x1.25 as Peter noted.

Turns out the bolts I've had the rack attached with are 60mm long. They go through the rack and then a spacer and then the garnish. I suspect taking the the garnish off would make little difference as the rack will still have to be spaced out about the same distance from the frame. So, I'll keep looking.

I have discovered that Honda used the 42mm bolt, 90127-MCJ-750, on the CBR954 Fireblade's muffler. It also had a 47mm version of the same sort of bolt (90116-MAT-000) which is also used on the CB1300. These things are easy to find if you have the part number; not so easy without.

Edit: I may have found a 60mm version for the muffler of the CB1000—P/N 90117-KGB-610.

Bolt Depot is a good source for fasteners.
