Heated grips question

[will866_imp]

Has anyone purchased the 'new' oem grip heaters (08T50-mge-000) on Samurider? It says they fit 2010-2016 but the model number differs from what some have installed here which is:

08T50-MGE-101 - Honda Heated Grip Kit
08T70-MGC-D30 - CB1100 DLX attachment kit

My real question is whether the attachment kit shown above will also work with the 08T50-mge-000?

Cant find definitive answer anywhere.

Thanks :biker:

I have the the same grip heater kit from Samurider ready to install on my bike and it came with an attachment kit (not at home to verify part number). It was the best bundled value I found online and thus why I bought that version from Mr. T. He didn't mention any incompatibility issues with U.S. spec bikes....

FWIW, the current part number for "Heated Grips" on the Honda site ends in -C10 and claims to be a new and improved design with smaller controls and grip diameter. The part number for the attachment kit now ends in -C31.

Could it be that the -101 and -000 parts are for the original grip heater kit and represent the same parts but from different markets and the -C10 kit is actually the newest version? Even if that is true, I would think the attachment kits are interchangeable because connectivity shouldn't have changed....

what is the "attachment kit"? Isn't it all just one heated grip kit?

No, the grips are the same for all bikes. The attachment kit is for specific bikes and allows you to connect them to the bike for power. If a grip fails, you just get new grips and you don’t have to buy another attachment kit.

I think the attachment kit has the controller too, but can’t remember.

The left grip has a button that turns them on and off and selects one of 3 heat levels.

I get it... thanks.

They are def. on the list.

I read somewhere they are/were a pita to install.. I guess it depends who you talk to.

I'll report back on this shortly... Hoping to fit mine this coming week.

There's a lot of lessons learned here on the forum to clarify the instructions and now that I have experience pulling the tank; I'm hoping it wont' be too bad.

Quick update.... checked the part numbers and my kit from Samurider includes the -000 grips and the -D31 (DLX?) attachment kit.

was thinking of getting the dealer to install these on my new 2017ex before I take delivery. Has anyone gone that route and can you say approximately how much damage (parts and labor) I can expect? thanks

I checked into the parts....
$360ish plus shipping @ Babbits online. They offer a couple discount codes when you order then wait a bit. They will check back wondering why you didn't complete the order then offer a discount. 12%.
Labor? $$. There is a member that recently did this ... might get an idea how much time. Hourly shop rate I reckon varys where you are. Last I checked here it was in the $90 an hour range.

Did you read my update notes on installing the grips on my 2017 EX?

Installing OEM Heated Grips

I'd guess three hours labor for someone who had done the job before. But note my reservations about paying someone else to do the job. It's a fiddly piece of work, with plenty of places for screwups and sloppy shortcuts if someone doing the job doesn't really care. The Honda instructions are very specific, even to the point of indicating the exact locations of wire ties.

Maybe you prefer not to do the work yourself, but I recommend giving it some thought before you have a dealer tech do it.

I just installed a set on my '14 DLX....

Honestly, it's not an "easy" job, but mostly because it's time consuming with lots of fiddly steps. There is nothing in the procedure that a semi-mechanically inclined person can't handle with the instructions and notes from forum members (which are INVALUABLE).

Full disclosure; I also installed a set of lower bars at the same time which made a few steps easier but complicated getting the throttle cables set afterward. That probably won't be an issue if you keep the stock bars.

Some things to keep in mind if you do it yourself...

Plan ahead and make sure you have all the supplies you'll need on hand, to include an extra fuel line fitting and rubber insert. Pulling the tank is a must and reusing the old connector probably isn't worth the chance of it failing down the road. Aside from removing the tank, getting the electronics tray out is the next part of the job that requires some serious patience. The rest is just time consuming and tedious due to poor illustrations in the instructions and limited access/clearances for routing the harness.

If all of this sounds like more than you'd want to take-on, my suggestion for taking it to a dealer would be to find a service tech that has done it before (on a CB or similar Honda). Better yet, get a mechanically inclined buddy to help you out. That way, you know the particulars are done right and you'll save some coin on labor.

Please note that the OP has a 17 EX, which has a different fuel line connector at the tank (according to my service manual). The 17 EX fitting is all reusable, assuming that nothing has been damaged.

Ahh, ok! I wasn’t sure if that had changed. Probably a good thing then.... Hopefully the new fitting is a little easier to work with one hand.

I sure wouldn't call it easy . . . maybe the second time you do it, that would be the case! After consulting the manual a couple of times, then carefully removing it, it made a lot more sense to me. What was most important was moving the tank back and up to give the maximum amount of space to work on the fitting.
