Hello ,

another question from Belgium. sorry for my english in advance. I know there is a lot written about tics and clicks on the forum and i read all i could find but am still worried...

So last year (november i guess) i bought a Honda cb1100 2013 as my first bike. before i never driven one. I'm as new in motorcycles as i am in forums. anyhow..

i bought the bike at 30.000 km, the first owner bought it at the same Honda dealer as i did and this shop always maintened the bike (as they told me).. i had to go back to the shop at around 36000 for a first check. so i did it around 35000 to be sure (in may), i brought it in the night before. so they call me the day they're working on it and ask me if they don't have to check the valves. i said you tell me. i'm a new biker, learning every day, what the heck did i know about valves. so they checked the valves, chainged the oil, put some new tyres as i asked, etc. a lot of euros :D afterwards everybody asked me why the heck they checked the valves so soon.... :dodgy:
when it came out the shop after the checkup i heard a ticking sound in the motor that wasnt there before at all. it ran smoodly before. i went back and asked to check it and they solved it, no ticking sounds anymore. there was a little ring missing and air was slipping out wich gave the ticking sound. resolved anyway.

a week or two ago i started hearing another tick. so when i start the bike it is not there, but when i ride 5 minutes and she's warm, it ticks. It's one tick, or two. when in neutral, 1st, 2nd, any shift, and i go from 1100rpm to let's say 2000rpms, somewhere in the middle there is one tick. and it's louder when the bike is warmer. i'm now around 40000 km, i checked and noticed there was no oil in it anymore. wich was weird since they changed it only 5000 km ago and honda asks to do it after 6000. And why is the oil gone? i put it in my garage every night, it does not leak on the floor.. so i went to a shop neirby (not the dealer, a yamaha dealer closeby) who putted some 10w40 in it. the tick is still there. i check every day the oil level now, the oil doesnt leave for now..

i decided to drive to another Honda dealer in my region. not where i bought the bike, but less far and they only do Hondabikes. where i bought it they do ktm, yamaha, a lot, and they communicatie strange about valves and such. In the Honda shop where i went this week they also said it's strange they changed the valves so quickly. and they think the thicking sound is an electrical sound. they're gonna change the sprak plugs cause its still the first ones, change the oil filter again, the airfilter also and search where the tick comes from..(donna cost me euros i'm afraid)

you guys any ideas on that one tick? since i'm such a green biker you think their taking advantage of me selling me valve checkups and oil and sprak plugs when they have the chance? or i gotta relax and let them handle it, accept biking costs expirience or money, ignore the tick till my appointment next friday and feel safe when i drive it till then?

thanks in advance!
cheers

I think it's okay that you had the valves inspected at 35000 km. Many owners don't bother with frequent valve inspections and suffer no consequences, but it certainly can't hurt (unless the work is not performed correctly).

One consideration when taking the bike to a new dealer for service is their lack of knowledge of the last service, so it makes sense that they may recommend a full service. You may find that you can easily perform many of these periodic services yourself, including oil changes, air filter replacement, spark plugs, etc. I can't comment on the tick noise without actually seeing the bike.

Interesting point LR.

Just think of all the great training the service team gets ... at the rider's expense. With any luck, it may all work out.

That is not a bad description but it would be a great deal better if you could provide a video taken at different places that shows where the sound originates from.

Ask yourself; if the sound is electrical would it not be the same all the time?

The relationship with a dealer to me is a two way affair, if you want them to take care of your issues it may cost a bit because they have to search for the issue and spend time on it, also you can ask upfront to explain in detail what the problem was and how/if it was repaired rather than; oh ok then.......
A second or third opinion is a good idea but you then have to examine the outcome and evaluate the answers carefully, generally with these bikes if you leave them alone they will serve the owner well, you are not the first one that regrets lifting the valve cover too soon for a clearance check, some have driven the bike for over 80.000 km after the initial check, however we all understand that we want to take care of this machine.

If your bike sounds similar to this one ( at 25 seconds into the video ) don't do anything to it, yours has over 30.000 faultless kilometers, keep it that way;

And the oilcheck has to be done on the centerstand on a level surface according to the ( downloadable owners manual ), it is a wide oilpan and it takes 5 minutes after shutting the engine off to stabilise the oil level.

My goodness, that is a beautiful bike in the video. The gold forks and shocks really make the look for me.

My bike does not sound this loud (ticking / valves). 23,000 miles. Valves checked at 16,000 - all within spec.

i will make a video tomorow to show you. the noise we hear at 25 seconde in the video doesn't seems fault for me either. mine does the tick only when the bike is just on and slightly warm, so when the rpm's are dropped to 1100 in neutral, when i then pull the trottle till 2000 or 2500 it tics. when i drive a good bit and the bike is fully hot, then it tics sometimes even without trottle. friday i have the check up, new airfilter, new spark plugs, oil filter and oil. and he's gonna check the tick. i'll see and tell you after. tommorow i'll upload what i mean..

oil i check when bike is cold offcourse and on center stand. after 5000km's suddenly it was empty, i refilled it 2 or 3 weeks ago, now its still ok

Did you check the oil level according to the manual, Bronzaar? Put on the centre stand on level ground. Run the engine for 3-5 minutes; allow to stand for 2-3 minutes then check?

Bronzaar that sounds like a sound plan, we look forward to the video and it is always a good idea to check the dealer's work straight afterwards, what if you drove 5.000 km till the next change with that low oil level, how much did you top it up with?

they changed it at 35000 with 10w40. when i noticed i could'nt see a drup in it i had a little more than 40000.. so the yamaha dealer around the corner filled it up with a half liter of 10w40 i think. i saw everybody here suggested 10w30. i'll tell the Honda garage that friday.

Since i'm a complete beginner biker since last december i didn't payed as much attention to the technical part till now. i had blind confiance in the dealers work. In this new Honda garage i am gonna show him the document from the last check and ask him what he's gonna do and check afterwards for sur. i took the day of and i don't care if i have to camp in front of the garage till saturday and have the bike and the technician to explain me what and how and what about this tick.

I'm thinking of taking classes to learn how to work on a bike myself. i guess it would safe tons of money and nerve damage when i can rely on myself to maintain the bike.

You’re right about working on the bike yourself. I wish I knew enough to do more than the simple routine stuff. Don’t worry whether you use 10W30 or 10W40. Honda says the bike can cope with either of them.

(+1)

Honda manual recommends 10W30. Every Honda service center I have spoken to uses 10W40 and acknowledges the manual's statement of 10W30. However, they will use 10W30 if the owner insists.

- - -

You may find owners of excessively hotter climates will use no less than 10W40 grade.

Honda recommends in the manual: 10W-30 for winter, 10W-40 for summer. Same in the service manual.

As most riders only ride at modest or warm temperatures, 10W-40 is good enough in most cases.
