"Close" to red in automotive paint
#1

Hi all,

I have my Givi V47 trunk mounted to my '13. I have a replacement trim panel on my Givi to replace one with a small crack. I was thinking about painting that replacement panel in a color close to Glory Red to sort of match it to my bike.

Don't want to pay factory or Colorrite prices for an exact match - a Duplicolor automotive red that's close is fine, as I can pick up a can at an auto parts store and spray away.

Just wondering if anyone has done the leg work of finding an automotive color that's very close to Glory Red. If not, I can eyeball it.

Thanks!

Check with your local NAPA store. Some of them have the ability to match any color with a custom rattle can.

Hmm, might look into that, but don't have a NAPA anywhere near me. Plenty of O'Reilly and Autozone stores, however. Givi makes the panel I'm planning to paint in red, but it's a normal, non-metallic red, and costs $71. Ouch. But, made in Italy, so it must be really special.

So, my wife weighed in on my idea and told me it would be a mistake. She has studied art, and has a very good eye for such things. Here's her semi-professional evaluation:

"If you plan to tie visual elements together based on color, those elements should be in fairly close proximity to each other. The red gas tank is toward the front of the bike. Your trunk is at the back of the bike, and is black with silver trim. The silver trim picks up the silver side panels and grab rails, which are on the back half of the bike, and all of these elements compliment each other. Adding more red to the trunk would attempt to tie two elements at opposite ends of the bike together, and after spending a lot of time and effort, and knowing you, sanding it off and repainting it six times until you determine that it's "perfect", you would look at the result and think it sucks, and curse yourself for doing it in the first place. Remember when you did something very similar to your last truck, then you hated it so much that you sold the truck? This would be similar. Leave it alone."

I stared at it for 20 minutes, and said "yup, she's probably right."

Don't you hate it when you have to tell your wife that she is right (again)

A wife is something that keeps you from making stupid mistakes every now and then (no honey, don't stick your finger in that light socket). And, if you have one who is a medical professional, she can put you back together once you do make stupid mistakes (ok, honey, now that you have stuck your finger in the light socket, let's save your life). And, if you find a cool one, lets you buy motorcycles (I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason why you need one more of those). And if you find a REALLY cool one, she lets you do other stuff like race cars every now and then (wow, your car sure uses up tires faster than my car). But mostly keeping you from making stupid mistakes (no, you can't afford two race cars).

Glad you posted a photo, my first impression was; why paint it, it looks good the way it is.
If you want to find out what it would look like in red cover the givy with a red t shirt or something, chances are it will look bigger and attract attention to it, it looks nicely "camouflaged" now, i think you got a fine combination there, congratulationsThumbs Up

Yeah, a trunk doesn't add to the visual appeal of any bike. No need to emphasize it. Sure is handy, though! My wife has watched me "making it mine", which is the term she came up with to describe the process I go through every time I get a new bike - add luggage space, extra lights, a few touches here and there for comfort, and then detail the snot out of it to make it look like new.
