Killing the Buzz - Installing "Even Running" Cam?
#1

It's been a long time, and the 2013 cb1100 runs fine.

Two things I never liked with the bike: The 4-1 Factory Exhaust, which I swapped out for a 4-4 Wyvern.

And the buzzing engine at 3500 to 4500 rpm. I don't like "added" roughness. To me, if it's turbine smooth at all RPMs you did the job right in the first place.

Anybody swap out the factory cam for a smooth running "even" cam, one that also might add a few more ponies?

Lee

Yeah, one Canadian member just install front and rear cams, and both were "even"....and after that he once had a very rough time...but he actually lost 1/2 pony due to cams weight Tongue Smile

Now seriously, only PowerDubs and Ben70 played with cams, search the forum :

I went for a taller gearing with 1 tooth larger in the front and 2 or 3 lower in the rear and the unexpected result was smoother engine at 3500-4500 until 70-75mph with very minor reduction in torque power and no lugging issues .. I can hold the gear longer in the twisties if I want to as well. You may try this before switching the cams

Any link to a cam grinder for smooth cams AND additional power and torque for this bike? Also fuel delivery changes.

I want turbine smooth power. More would be better.

Thanks.

Web cams can grind whatever you want, but no promises of what the result will be.

I'd love to pick up a used cyl head to get a close look at the ports and measure to see if the cam timing is the only difference between banks.

If I could go back in time, I would actually pick a more aggressive grind than I did.

Anyone want to trade? Smile

I've never ridden an I-4 that was turbine smooth at all rpms

opposed 4 yes

inline 6 yes

but not an I-4

Not sure it could be done without mechanical trickery. An I=4, although balanced in the primary phase, is not inherently balanced in the secondary phase, therefore causing vibrations

From Wiki

Balance and smoothness

The inline-four engine is much smoother than one- or two-cylinder engines, and this has resulted in it becoming the engine of choice for most economy cars for many years. Its prominent advantage is the lack of rocking vibration, and the lack of need for heavy counterweights makes it easier to be sporty (quick revving up and down). However, it tends to show secondary imbalance at high rpm because two pistons always move together, making the imbalance twice as strong as other configurations without them.

As someone who has spent a lot of time riding thumpers, I smile when I read this thread.

ROFL no kidding

ride an old brit single or a Yamaha XS 650 twin and tell me again how bad the vibes are in a CB 1100

Well, if the cb1100's engine was so smooth that it needed roughening up, I would say that's smooth enough.
