PLOT Chain Guard
#1

The other night I was riding home and heard some metal tapping going on. It wasn’t a long ride and as soon as I got off I found it immediately, my PLOT chrome chain guard had broken just above the rear screw. I remember thinking when I installed it that the metal seemed thin and that part of it seemed a little flimsy but I figured plenty of people had them and I never heard of anything breaking so it must be alright.

I don’t have anyone riding with me on the CB and I don’t recall anything hitting it so I can only surmise it’s a stress fracture, maybe the metal was bad there. In looking at the break the metal seems brittle to my untrained eye.

So anyway I contacted Takashi and no, there is no warranty on an almost two year old chain guard. I didn’t expect it but it doesn’t hurt to ask. So now I’m thinking about trying to repair it. Mainly because I’m not about to spend that kind of money on another new one. Especially if the lifetime is only two years. But I’m unsure what the best way to repair it would be. So I’m asking you metallurgists out there....what are your thoughts?

I have the Plot chrome chain guards on my 2013 and 2014 from the very beginning and I just checked them and they are still very solid . Did yours "vibrate " a little over time and got metal fatigue ?

This happened to one other member too. I hope mine holds up.

I can't remember what he did to fix his. Maybe I'll search some and see if I can find it.

OK, here is the guy-- http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread....#pid198300

That's the only explanation I can come up with but both screws were tight so it shouldn't have been vibrating. At least not excessively.

Thanks Popgun, I don't think a washer alone is going to do the trick though. I'm thinking of reinforcing it in some manner from behind but I don't think a piece could be welded there without discoloring the chrome. Maybe using an adhesive.

This probably broke due to vibration and skinny end design, which cannot absorb vibration and weight of the chain guard.

I would not fix it .
I would chrome plated existing plastic chain guard and reinstall it back.
This may not meet your expectation but this is what I would do.

On the other hand, to accommodate vibration, you may prefabricate canvas reinforced rubber strap, shape it to the guard's end then gently rivet it (tubular or semi-tubular type) to the inside, and finally bolt it by using a M6 flange type bolt. If done neatly, you want see any rubber strap.

Is there a reinforcement washer on the inside of the broken piece..?..probably yes..

Can draw you a pic if needed...

No reinforcing washer, just a hole in the metal.

I might not look great but you could clamp the guard between two washers and use a longer bolt.

How about gluing the PLOT guard over the original guard and remount using the originals brackets? Not sure if it would slide over it, though.

i think I'd have it welded, then just paint the tab in flat black to cover the discoloration. The black will just make the tab disappear.

You can have my Plot for a burger and a couple beers....if you can find me a tasteful black or brushed aluminum I can buy to replace it.

I don't want plastic, and I don't want something with a logo etched into it.

The Plot looked great when I had standard black steps- but not so much with my brushed aluminum steps now.
