Front wheel bearings shifted in hub.

I started a thread a few days ago about a dealer switching my front wheel spacers to the wrong sides during a tire change. I didn't catch this and tried to install the front wheel that way.

I tried to reinstall the front wheel with the spacers on the correct sides and it seems that when I installed it with the spacers on the wrong sides it shifted the bearings in the hub, lifting the right side bearing off it's seat in the hub.

I'm no mechanic but I do design machinery for a living and know a thing or two about bearings. If I pound that right bearing back in it will cause the bearing distance collar to move the left bearing by pounding on the inner race only, never a good idea. I am afraid I will damage the left bearing. It might work O.K. if I slowly pressed the right bearing back to it's seat on an arbor press.

I think the correct way is to pull the right bearing with a puller, remove the bearing distance collar and pound the left bearing towards the outside of the hub with the correct tool. Then reinstall the distance collar and right bearing. Then pound the left bearing until it seats on the distance collar. If the distance collar can only be installed from the left side after the right bearing is installed then both bearings need to be pulled and reinstalled.

Any thoughts?

You are way over thinking this. The bearings were already pushed by the inner races, if at all, when the wheel was installed with the spacers on the wrong sides. I honestly can not see how the bearings would have been pushed in the first place. Nothing was holding the wheel side to side. Just swap the spacers so they are correct and install the wheel per the factory manual. It will be fine.

Doesn't seem that difficult. The book says to drive in a new right bearing squarely until it is fully seated on the hub.

Install the distance collar, then drive in a new left bearing until it is seated on the distance collar.

Tried that. Everything is shifted so that when I tighten the axle nut there is now a gap with the axle showing between the left spacer and the fork and the left brake caliper is overlapping the fork bosses at least 1/8 inch (can't get the left brake caliper on).

Sorry no. I don't have a camera or smart phone. Low tech kinda guy. But you can see that the left side spacer barely protrudes past the side of the hub and the right side spacer protrudes too much compared to the pictures shown in the repair manual.

I would pull the bearings to inspect them closely. Then, reinstall or replace if needed.

Those pics in the manual are what mine look like (on the bike). I tried to measure the amount between the seal and the fork, but it is a little hard with the wheel mounted. And I didn't bother last year when I had the wheel off.

You really need a camera if you want good help here. Sometimes a problem is not obvious until someone else sees it Smile
