Parts interchangability on US model years '13/'14 vs. '17?
#1
I notice on Samurider that there are a huge number of available parts for the 2017+ models and less so for the older 2013/2014 models.

I suspect that with regards to trim and body pieces, a lot of them are interchangeable between a 2013/14 and a 2017 CB1100. I see a few parts that look interesting but don't feel like the gamble on fit with the prospect of having to do an international return. Perhaps a manufacturer of a given part just hasn't validated fit on an older older model now that they are getting up there in age?

For example, there are numerous intake air covers which specifically list compatibility with model years 2017+. That would seem to preclude being able to use them on the older models. Like this one for example.

https://www.samurider.com/?p=29242

Then I ran into this listing for an intake air cover that claims compatibility with everything back to 2010 which just makes it more confusing.

https://www.samurider.com/?p=26191

I searched the forum and found a few discussions on specific parts, but I was wondering if anyone knows what is safe to swap versus what isn't. I imagine engine parts most likely aren't safe, but I can't imagine Honda retooled very much if they didn't have to especially with trim parts. I would be curious to hear other peoples feedback.

In the US, it was 2012 models (ABS, non-ABS), 2014 models (Std and DLX), and 2017EX. The problem is that the forum reaches owners from all around the world, and they were sold in different years, with different tank, seat, wheel, color, exhaust combinations.

So you will need to be very specific as to what you want to put on what, and maybe someone's done that or knows. Samurider may be the only reliable source of what fits what.
BTW, what year model do you have?

I have the US version of the 2014 Standard. I was mainly looking at possibly replacing air intake covers, adding a luggage rack (still reading pages of threads from 2014 on what is compatible there, lol) and heated grips, driving lights and a aux USB power source. It sure seems a lot more complicated than it was back in 1988. My brain was younger then though, so there's that.

The luggage rack for the 2013 fits the 2014 STD. I have a recollection that the DLX is subtly different. Lord Popgun will remember, or Mr T at Samurider will be able to tell you.

Likewise, Mr T will tell you which heated grips fit. Don't hold me to this, as I have no real idea what I'm talking about, but I'd be very surprised if OEM ones did not fit all models.

An aux USB power source and driving lights will have to be aftermarket. Anything that works on pre 2017 models is likely to work. In 2017 Honda changed to LED lighting. I have no idea whether that makes any difference to driving lights, but I recall people have had some problems retrofitting LED headlights on the pre 2017 bikes.

I think the frame angle is a tad different on the '14 model so a '13 rack tilts up some. The heated grips are the same for all or almost all the bikes Honda has (maybe not gold wings). It's the connection kit harness that is model specific.

A USB power source is easy to add and there are a number of ways to do so.

The driving lights have been added by a number of members and I'll let them discuss those.

Had OEM rear rack on my '13 and then transferred it over to my '14 = fits perfectly.

I also know of an instance where a rack intended for a 2013 Standard model would not fit the 2014 Standard. The original Honda Genuine Accessory (p/n 08L70-MGC-D30) was a low-profile rack, with the load surface about an inch below the level of the seat. The high profile ones are almost in line with the seat..

The 2014 rack was a high profile. Both 2014 Deluxe and Standard would use the same rack (p/n 08L70-MGC-N40), but the Honda kit also included a pair of extra extension brackets in the kit to lower the rear mount about 20mm. (these brackets are not sold separately.)

Buying aftermarket is a crap shoot, especially as many come from China and sending them back is nearly impossible. I think you would have better luck with the high-profile design.

This was my aftermarket crap shoot ...

Lucky for me it put up with day-after-day use and abuse.
