Rear indicator design problem
#1
I was checking my led indicators after a ride yesterday with the four way flashers on and front pair ok and very bright but on checking the rear the left was very dim and the further I walked back it was barely visible so on a closer look found both rear indicators loose and the left had turned slightly downwards but was working fine.
The leds are very dependant on line of sight so although working ok they need to be in the right position.
Simple, I thought the bolts had worked loose but no they are very tight and at the end of their travel so they are designed to be loose in case of getting caught with a foot I guess.
I didn't have time to do anything else but will look again today and maybe install a washer to hold them in place better?

Anyone with these type indicators please check the rear ones as they need to be in the right position to be seen.

I have an RS, with LED indicators. They are tight and keep their position. No issues there.

That's good to hear but means something is wrong with mine as they will twist up and down even though the bolt is tight. Not looked as yet but good to know they shouldn't move.

Any chance your indicators were tampered with Mixagon?

I very much doubt they have been tampered with they are original and the bike has never been out of my sight.

So far I've taken the bolt out from under the mudguard and its a long bolt which goes right into the lens holder so the stalk is just a spacer which should be held tight by the bolt being in place. As I said earlier the bolt seemed to be at the end of its thread so I've added a 4mm washer to allow for more usable thread and tightened as much as I can but the indicator still moves in any direction about 4cm and still rotates downwards with vibration.

So its most likely the rubber stalk (which will not come off) has a metal insert which is maybe to long so the rubber is not compressed enough.

Will look again and try and figure this out as I would like to know my signals are visible from behind.

To solve the loose rear indicator problem I traced it to the metal spacer tube inside the rubber sleeve being to long allowing the rubber sleeve to be loose when the whole unit was tight.
There is two ways to solve this as the picture shows...

1) Make a 5mm spacer washer to shorten the length.

2) Saw 5mm off the metal tube to make it shorter.

I did the longer method (to keep the tubes original) and made two 5mm spacers and now the indicators are how they should have been, tight enough to not to slowly rotate downwards.

This is a serious safety issue with led units as if they rotate just a little downwards they can not be seen clearly from behind, even though working ok.

They should have put locating pins in the housings so they were always in the correct position. I might do this over the winter.
