Brake disc rubbing noise
#1
A few weeks ago I lost my earplugs, and start noticing some noise while movement. I discovered that it’s drake discs on both wheels are making rubbing noise. The front wheel is making more noise, I suppose because there are two discs.

However it’s not blocking wheels anyhow, just the noise. It’s very annoying.

Just wanted to see your thoughts, I don’t remember it like that. And I definitely didn’t have it on my other bikes.

How to fix it?

One of the first things to check would be the rear brake operation, here is a clip to show what it should look like close-up;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFcrdAEVAQY

The rear brake caliper also slides on two bushes ( with the rubber covers ) that need to be clean and lubricated with silicon grease to allow for easy travel on them ( they retract from the disk ).

The part that is responsible for retracting the brake pistons is the first sealing o-ring, the o-ring that you can see first is the dust cover for the second sealing o-ring behind it, so there are two grooves per piston in the caliper.

The grooves should be free of buildt up dirt to enable the o-ring to be pushed one way and to return to their original shape when the pressure is released.
Over time as the brake pads wear down the pistons migrate towards the disk and the o-rings allow for that by slowly slipping their position with respect to the pistons.

If your bike has abs brakes the procedure is a bit more involved ( removal of possible air in the lines ) but basically similar.

So to clear the brake pads you have to look at what specifically is not happening as it is intended, then take appropriate action, changing fluid, inspecting calipers and pistons for correct movement or whatever is the case, hope this helps.

Good write-up, Max.
It is amazing how many noises my bike makes when I forget my earplugs.

Always good to hear from you Bob, i was going to crack an earplugs remark but yeahh you know...., see how this works out for him, always difficult to gauge someone's skills with minimal background info but here goes, hope the pads are not mis-aligned, it's happened beforeUndecided

Do motorcycles have any pad ‘noise makers’ like many or most autos have?

I’d have to ask the age & miles of the cycle and if any work was ever done?

My old '84 FJ1100 had brake pads that wore down to the 'noise makers' and let me know that it was time to replace them, 1 week after I bought the bike from the original owner (!).

Thank you everyone for replying. I’ll check the pads, probably I worn them.

FWIW, the noise from the worn brake pads on my old FJ1100 was the scraping sound of metal on metal. It was so loud that I would guess that one would be able to hear even with earplugs in..
