First Long Ride (Naperville IL - Bloomington IL) Experience....
#1
Hi All ,
Wanted to share my riding experince yesterday from Naperville IL to Bloomington IL (120 Miles) .

Started Cruising about 45 MPH in the City when I touched 75 , 80 and then 90 MPH on the interstate 55 .Bike was extermely stable under a very moderate wind factor. Extremely pleasurable ride. Fuel Economy was extremely good ....120 miles in just 2.5 gallons of gas ....

Lot of people Noticed the bike and few were checking it out in the rest area....(Esteem Booster ) Smile

On the way back , The Wind factor played a spoil Sport (IL is notorious for Wind factor).....it was very dificult to maintain the 70 MPH speed . I never felt myself so heavy ,although I was wearing perfect Gears . At one point in time it was really difficult to keep my neck up.

Final verdict :- Bike is too good, very Stable and comfortable , But be aware of the WIND ... The biggest adversary of the CB 1100 riders .....

Nano,
That IS terrific gas mileage! Certainly better than what I have read was projected for the CB11. Is that for the entire trip or for just the first half with the low wind? Thanks Nano

I will be buying my CB soon and my friend hasn't checked his mileage yet. I am curious what mileage anyone else has recorded. (?) Both of us will have sidecars so you can imagine what that will do to the mileage. So, I'm wondering what the base line should be.
Thanks!

There are a few threads here on the forum regarding the CB's fuel efficiency. The miles per gallon ratings that most of us have experienced are in the low to mid 50's when riding on the highway. Obviously the wind factor is going to play a part in that.

Wow Guth! That's great! That's exactly what I wanted to know (and what I wanted to hear!). Good news, good news!

Hi Buffalohead,
The gas mileage was - 120 miles/2.5 Gallons (one way). Was approximately 48 miles / gallon.

And Yes , A Side car installation is certainly going to get your mileage down by atleast 30 - 40 %.....

Side cars.... any line up of choices? I was considering one for taking the kid out with us some time. Either a side car for the 1100 or one for the wifes scooter....

Ironically, I grew up in Pontiac, Illinois and my grandfather lived in Bloomington for a number of years. Big Grin

dBuster,
I have a DMC M72C (Dauntless) sidecar. It has a customized fender so it doesn't look like a Harley fender. DMC makes a real quality product and I can't wait to see it attached to a CB. I recently sold the BMW it was attached to. It's a very traditional sidecar design that will make the bike/sidecar look timeless. But, I will need a black CB which will probably be achieved by painting a red one. Sad

I have a friend who is attaching a Hannigan sidecar to his CB. It's much more modern looking. It's at the paint shop now where the 2 best painters around (who have painted candy apple red hotrods since back in the 60's) decided that Honda's exotic red paint is so hard to match, they are ordering the paint from Honda to paint the upper half of the sidecar. The lower half will be the side cover silver. When they are finished, I will post pictures.

I can attest to the wind factor.. On my way back from work this morning I was doing ~60-65 mph and ran into a bit of rain and gusty winds.. It helped when I bent down and tucked myself closer to the tank taking the rider sail factor out of the equation.. Smile

Yes "Retroman"... I applied the same trick and was able to make it till Naperville. I should have taken few breaks to avoid the exhaustion . I litterally felt my bones / spine cogging in together after I set my feet on the ground at the first signal after 1hr 45 mins continuous ride.. Smile
