New key won't work in ignition
#31
I found the spare key earlier this week. It appears my problem was the key wasn't cut to go deep enough into the ignition. I haven't been back to the dealer to have them fix the keys they made for me. I'm interested to find out why the keys weren't cut correctly.

the blank must be clamped in the key machine so that the "shoulder" of the blank where she notches will end or maybe its the tip of the blank in this case is indexed perfectly at a "stop" which is part of the key cutter. If that stop is off or they have the clamping a little off, then the new key will bottom out on the lock plug(the part that turns) before the notches move the discs enough to let it turn. If they have an old key to copy then they can easily check this on the new key. Starting from just the code they didn't have the cutter and / or blank set up good enough.

How does one bend the key in the helmet lock? Insert key, turn... where's the bending? I've had no problem whatsoever with either the gas cap or the helmet lock.

I'll tell you how I did it. Put key in lock to take off the seat. Put bike on the centerstand. Key will bend against your leg as the bike moves up on the stand. I almost bent a second one just by walking close to the left side while the key was still in the lock.

Easily avoided by always taking the key out of the lock after using it.

I was probably the first one here to bend a key this way, but at least a few others have done it since.

D'oh! I have OCD and can't leave the key in the helmet/seat lock because it's just too juicy a target for whacking against accidentally. As soon as the seat is off, the key comes out. Next step is after that. Sometimes OCD is a good thing. :-)

I'm just catching up with this thread.
I used the helmet lock for the first time the other day and had a devil of a time with the long key. What a PITA!!
I have a Helmet Guardian that I may install behind the licence plate and works well. I also have a Helmetlok device so have options other than that fiddly helmet lock.

I think it must be hit or miss. I have a harder time getting the key to start entering the ignition cylinder than I do with the tank or lock.

Same here shdwghst. It's caused by a bent key. Try your other key
