My CB1100 was in the single blinking red bar zone for 38 miles before I filled it up. The tank capacity is officially 3.86 gallons, but it would only take 3.15 gallons, which filled to the bottom of the filler neck cylinder. I did not try to top it off, reasoning the fast discharge from the filler pump would overflow and make a mess.
Observations:
1. There was at least .6 gallons of room in it when normally filling up, and topping it off, while possible, definately risks splashing gas the way pumps flow nowadays.
2. The red fuel light started to blink w/ 1.3 gallons in reserve.
3. I calculate I can safely travel around 50 miles once the gauge light starts blink.
4. When normally filled (not topped-off) the gas tank allows for 120 miles or so before red blinking bar starts, or 2.4 gallons of use from normal fill-up.
Oh yes, it was 50 degrees and sunny today, and I took it for a nice country ride. This motorcycle is very relaxing to short-shift and ride, the fuel injection makes any gear at any rpm flawless in power delivery.

Those are all observations based on your riding style and where you ride. For me with city riding mainly I start flashing with only 108 miles being traveled.
There are other threads here that talk about this silly fuel gauge we have and a good lengthy one about how much each one of those bars represents. Check it out sometime.
You do have some interesting observations though, I will give you that.
Some, in regards to mileage, have been anywhere between I believe the low end was 34 mpg and the top end was in the 50+ mpg. More good reading on that also. Me I am right about the 37 mpg with the stop and go city driving mainly.

Lowest for me since first two tanks has been 50 mpg, highest 56.8. Furthest I've gone to flashing reserve 141 miles. Average to flashing reserve 131 miles. Furthest I've gone on a tank of gas 179.9 miles. Most I have put into the bike 3.3 gals.

Topped mine off today, filled to the bottom of the neck, (always), travelled 108 miles, required 2.1 gallons to fill up. Mostly city driving.

I agree with your observations. I typically do 150 miles between fill ups. My mileage runs from 50-60 mpg depending on wind and speed.

I an definitely attest to the 3.86 gallons. Thats how much I put in today after running out of gas on I-94 one mile from home.

I too also go to 150mi before I fill-up, and usally I have .5 or .4 gal. left in the tank.

I've found the CB annoyingly difficult to fill without slopping from Day1. Fire-hose pressure from the pumps doesn't help, but the almost complete lack of a "neck" in the tank only aggravates it. If I'm doing a day ride planning multiple fills I bring a dedicated gas cleanup rag.

What a great idea. You know I don't overfill but I do occasionally get little drops that fly back up out of the neck or a drop that comes out of the hose after I'm sure its done draining. A rag in the tank bag would come on handy.
