Warranty BS as explained by an insider
#1
As of this past Saturday, I am no longer the F & I manager for a Honda-only dealership. The owner says it is "seasonal" but the truth is I had a couple of recent spats with the sales manager and one of the other owners about ethics. Obviously not a smart thing to do in a dealership! (Or to any boss, for that matter) But it's OK. I can go back to being retired, and they can go on doing what they do.

Honda's suggested retail pricing for warranties is exactly double the cost. If a CB1100 customer buys an extended warranty for their bike for the Honda-suggested price, Honda and the dealer each get half the money. If the amount is less than the suggested price, the dealer gets less, but Honda still gets paid the same. After all, Honda is the one that is providing the warranty work. If the price the customer agrees to is higher than "suggested", the dealer receives all of the additional price paid over suggested. Simply put, the amount Honda gets never changes. The dealer representative is trying to earn the most money for the dealership.

Someone has already provided the name of a dealership that will sell you a HONDA warranty online. I haven't investigated it closely, or purchased on myself through them, but I am 99.99999% certain it is the real deal. That's where I would go, or recommend my friends buy their warranty.

Someone wrote that they thought they couldn't cancel their warranty if purchased through financing the bike. Not true. Warranties can be canceled at any time and the funds will be disbursed to the lienholder if necessary. Cancelled warranties are refunded on a pro-rated basis. If the dealer tries to tack on a "cancellation fee", make them show you where you agreed in writing that they could.

As far as pricing, I think a 48-month extended warranty suggested price on a CB1100 is $799. If a dealer quoted you $1500, they were 1)lying through their teeth, and 2) going to pocket $1100 in profit with $400 going to Honda to pay for the warranty.

Honda warranty pricing is based on the engine not the type of bike...cruiser, standard, sport, etc. Dirt bikes aren't eligible.

The dealership where I worked paid me $10 per hour, and 5% of the dealer profit on an F & I product (loans and/or warranties or GAP) So...if I sold you an extended warranty on your CB1100 for $800, then I made $20, if they remembered to pay me. If I sold it to you for $600, then I only made $10, but you saved $200. It was an easy choice for me. I earned more in parts discounts than they paid me many months.

Thank you honorable person.
Dealerships earn their reputations.
Bought mine from Sanford NC Honda dealer, friends with owner (close to retiring 2nd generation owner) for a little over 40 years (ouch).
Math is correct.
I'll pay pay my hard earned money for fair value and return to local dealers when my patronage is treated with respect.
Have had good dealings, and bad. I'm a repeat customer because I choose to be.
Still buy accessories from local BMW dealer because he treated me right when it counted - Carolina BMW in Greensboro.
A man is as good as his word.

The dealership where I purchased my CB wanted to sell me a non-Honda warranty. Since my older brother had long ago warned me about such, I ask them about a Honda warranty. It was only a little more expensive than the fly-by-night what-am-I-really-getting warranty. Their big selling point was that with this third party warranty I could have the bike repaired at a non-Honda dealership. I think I paid about $500.00 for two additional years.

Thanks for you informative post.

Interesting point!

The only reason the F & I person before me sold a third-party extended warranty instead of the Honda warranty is the third-party warranty company paid her a $50 per contract bounty. And the only plausible explanation for the Honda plan being more expensive was to "help" you make the "right" decision. The F & I person was a very close relative of the owner, and neither saw an issue with it. Nope...no conflict of interest there. Only "excellent customer service!"

I wonder, but have a pretty good idea, if automobile extended warranties are exactly the same. Everything I've ever read online indicates they are (re: MSRP and profit percent).

Every cent the dealer makes on the extended warranty is gravy since it doesn't cost them one thin dime to service it. So, whether one pays $1,100 over the dealer's cost or $1, it's all profit to them. As such, the customer should endeavor to cut that to the bone. IMO, $20-50 over is plenty for a two-second transaction.

Interesting. Ties in with MG's thread:

Ah, the sweet taste of redemption. Haha. Thanks Olyrider for your post. And thanks Pterodactyl for finding and putting a link to my earlier thread. I went back and read it just now. That my post received mixed responses is an understatement. I just noticed that the discussion continued for pages after I had stopped reading and responding. I saw that someone else had offered some "cheese with that whine." Haha. I wonder how I would have responded back then. Oh well, I'm definitely not going back to that. But I did see that ClassicVW responded on my behalf. Thanks Classic for having my back. Much appreciated.

M.G. - You got it Bro! Thumbs Up
Olyrider and I share the same experiences with a dealership. I was on the sales end at a car dealership that was known as one of the better ones, and I lasted exactly 4 months due to ethics differences.
