I can see it - doing a wheelie, sorta freak out, put your feet down, miss the peg, step on the center stand and kick it down, dragging it. I'd check to see if it works correctly, and, heaven forbid, the frame looks good at the mounting points for the center stand. Does the bike stand up straight and level when it's on the center stand or is it too ground down to try?

I think it must have been something like that. I looked at it again this evening, and I'm actually thinking it might be ok. Everything above the part that contacts the ground looks normal, and if the wear was equal on both sides, it may stand up straight. I'll give it a try sometime, when I have another person to stand on the right side in case it starts to tip in that direction. I have an irrational fear with center stands anyway, that the bike may start falling away from me, and this bike is heavier than my previous bikes. I asked the seller if it was still usable, and his answer as I recall was equivocal.

Well, a little general clean up is needed. Also some bits of hardware are starting to corrode here and there. It's due for tires and oil/filter change. And (this is weird) the center stand is unsound. The previous owner said he accidentally stepped on it when trying to wheelie and sent sparks everywhere. Hard to imagine, except I can see it is ground down badly. This story came out after the paperwork was signed. I missed it on my inspection and it made me wonder if I had bought from the right seller. But my test ride seemed fine. It started, ran, shifted, and stopped like it should, so I think it is sound.
The CB1100 is incredibly well designed and built. I believe it can stand up to almost anything, including questionable judgement of a rider. Enjoy the restoration and make that motorcycle truly yours.

No, but when I put the new on one, it will be interesting to compare them. It is pretty deformed.
Anyway, the janky stand setup with the wood got the bike vertical so I could check the oil. I also inflated the tires. The previous owner had not ridden it all year and they were pretty low.
Because the registration was expired, I had only ridden it around the neighborhood before purchasing. That was in the city, but I live in the country so I was eager to get a quick ride in yesterday morning to wring it out. I fired it up and rode to the gas station and gassed up. I continued south to Point Lookout and stopped for a quick photo at the confederate cemetery, then headed back north to home.
It was awesome. It ran perfectly and reminded me why I bought the bike. It dispelled the "why did I buy this bike" worry; there is hardly anything really needed on this bike, just a little attention and to stop some minor corrosion. And to be sure, the sound has a certain awesomeness with these pipes, but I think the quieter classic ones will be more to my liking.
That afternoon it passed inspection. The inspector loved the bike. He also gave me the name and number of a good motorcycle mechanic. I'll probably ask him to do the tires.
After that I went straight to the Motor Vehicle Administration but it was late in the day and they said I'd have to come back first thing Monday to get the plates. Overall, a nice first day.
