No question HD and BMW has had their issues, but speaking from experience, BMW is generally very good about standing behind their product, even after the warranty has expired and a known defect crops up. Of course, with most Japanese bikes, it seems defects are addressed and resolved before the bikes leave the factory.
I don't dispute Consumer Reports' findings but recognize their report represents a compilation of survey results from motorcycle owners (so there could be testing bias, plus we don't know if these are stock or modified vehicles). Consumer Reports did not buy the motorcycles and put them through their own testing protocol, as they do with washing machines and toasters. Take their findings with a grain of salt.
