I felt the same way. Really liked the looks though. The one retro bike I would really like to ride and possibly buy is the z900rs.

I feel pretty good that the R9T is continuously compared to the CB1100. It can mean these are meaningful bikes to think about and gets the emotional juices flowing.

Much to Ferret's point, I wouldn't expect someone who is attracted to the CB1100 to be conflicted by the R Nine T, just from an aesthetic, functional, and mechanical standpoint. To me, they're two different animals, not unlike Honda vs. Harley. The Honda is supremely approachable and easy to love, while the BMW is, quite frankly, an acquired taste that, while it has some very favorable attributes, probably won't appeal to everyone.

"Smooth, quiet, great brakes, great transmission, handles well, powerful, everything works together, and everything looks great. Will pull out of a corner in 3rd or 4th gear at 3000 rpms and will run 80 mph on the freeway at 4000 rpms in 6th. IMO it's just a great motorcycle, and at the prices they can be bought for just an outstanding bargain to boot"
Could not agree more. I paid $5,999.00 for a brand new 2014 STD leftover. Happy camper.

The transmission is only a minor part of what would sell you or not on the R9T, or most any opposed twin BMW. They are just different, throughout. But the engine is the heart of a motorbike, and IMHO, one either loves or dislikes the BMW motor. It is not anodyne, like a typical Japanese I4, but is bursting with mechanical feel. I like character as much as the next character- liking guy, but not every character.
You absolutely must ride the R9T before buying one.
