I hope to locate a CB1100 this summer, and once familiar with the bike invite my almost 10-year old daughter to join me on some rides. For other parents who are members here a few questions:
Any suggestions on the best back rest to attach to this bike? Would like something that gives her a bit more confidence that she won't slide off.
Does 10 years old sound like a reasonable age for a first experience on the back of a motorcycle?
Any other suggestions/comments related to riding with a child on the back?
Thanks!

As long as the child is big enough to reach the foot rests for balance, then they should be ready to ride - with instructions first on how to be a motorcycle passenger.
The attention span of children is short and they may not always be thinking of holding on so a backrest is a good idea.
How to mount one is now the question. Sorry, but I have no ideas - although I seem to recall a thread here where a member constructed one on his own.

Here is a thread in the HOW TO section that may help.

As far as I know there is no dedicated back rest made. You need a rack to start. Or bribe Jonz to make you one. His is cool :

buy a fehling luggage rack for your bike. It has a bar that comes up behind the seat. looks a lot like the old grab bars that used to be on bikes. The fehling rack is made in Germany, great quality, and price is very low. I have one and so does Ferret. google it. No way will someone come off the back with this on there. It also gives the passenger something to hold on to. Great for confidence of the passenger.
look at pictures on: "Man, what a rack..." posted on CB forum.

Read what Ferret had to go through to get that Fehling. That's why I didn't mention it. YMMV

My solution to the same problem was to install the Honda rack, and a

Oops, I fat-fingered that last one...
In order to give my daughter a safe comfortable place to ride, I used a Honda rack and a Shad top case with pad. Probably the most overlooked feature of the oem rack are the generous and very sturdy grab bars.
Also, I might add, those same grab bars improve the ease with which the center stand is deployed.

Here is a Shad setup.

It is on a Honda rack, but a couple posts down is says that Shad also makes a rack for our bike.
Honda makes a nice top case too. Not cheap though and you have to order it from Japan.
