Just yesterday a group of us had ridden down the coast for a coffee at one of our favourite donut shops.
When we arrived there were several of the "straight pipes" types already there; you know who I mean without mentioning a brand name.
They left shortly after with constant cranking of the throttle and then blasted away down the road winding the V-twin engines up tight. I don't know who they thought they were impressing, but it wasn't anyone within hearing range.

There seems to be no shortage of - and unfortunately, men - particularly of the western world who have weak self-esteem, the need to be heard and seen, very low EQ, and overall down right useless social skills to cope in the civilized world. They tend to group with the likes of their own in hope of binding with courage and "strength" in numbers. They believe they can easily purchase their way into social acceptance, typically at the expense of the real world. Their destruction on the environment takes the form of noise nuisance, air pollution, and on-demand diesel pick-up truck discharges - to name a few.

Yes, they are wearisome and a waste of skin. However, some are our brothers, fathers and grandfathers who likely will not change and we just have to wait until karma re-balances their negative energies.

Let's hope we can teach our children better than that.

I've always felt that I'm a bit "out of step" within the motorcycling community because I detest loud exhausts on road bikes and it's just so refreshing to hear
from you guys that I'm really not alone. I've always thought that "loud exhausts" are just aural bullying, MAKING others suffer. It's all so tedious.

Now, racing 'bikes are a different matter and my favourite recording was a Stanley Schofield recording of Bill Ivy's 125 Yamaha and Mike Hailwood's 6 cylinder 350 Honda, screaming down the Mountain on the IoM TT Circuit (not in the same race!!).

So thank you, Forum, for restoring my sanity and belief that quieter 'bikes are more, well, polite and civilised. Big Grin

Well looks like im the minority here so far lol. I think there are plenty of us on here who enjoy a little extra sound to go along with the riding experience. I think one of the sweetest things is how each type of engine kinda has its own unique sound especially when amplified. I have a Vtwin Yamaha cruiser, Single cylinder Royal Enfield thumper, and of course the CB. I have an exhaust system on every one of them. Are they drag pipes with no baffles and constantly run full throttle for the sake of attention or disrupting society ? No. I simply enjoy the sound of my bikes and am pretty respectful with "getting on them" etc. Just like some people like quiet motorcycles or cars some like them the opposite or even somewhere in the middle. Im def a middle ground person. Its gonna come down to what each person wants in their riding experience. To each their own, and unfortunately there will always be bad apples out there ruining it for the rest of us. I do think the sound meter thing is ridiculous like red light cameras. Just keep giving up more freedoms of day to day business and next thing you know you'll have a camera strapped to you everywhere you go for the government to monitor you. Well maybe not that far lol. But i always felt like if there is a law about a certain decibel limit then fine, leave it up to law enforcement to enforce it. Just my 2 cents and i respect peoples opinion for what they like or dont.

Nope. Don't like speed cameras, red light cameras, or now noise cameras. I don't like loud bikes or cars either, but I could not possibly care less that other people like them nor do I think they should be ticketed for riding with them. Further, I think it's amusing how we are so quick to stereotype riders who like loud pipes. Remember, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Red light cameras are being challenged in court as being unconstitutional because there is no due process involved. Many states and municipalities have removed them or outlawed them all together for that reason.
I don't believe that sound cameras would face any better of a fate here than that.

I do disagree on the ticketing of loud pipes though. If the equipment conforms to the noise requirements at the time of manufacture, fine. But overly loud pipes are a no-go item and the riders should be made to fix that issue.
If you get stopped by an officer and ticketed for it, fine. but no robo-tickets.

You will like a red light camera after a car hit you or someone in your family gets hurt by a car running a red light.

The Golden Horseshoe region of Ontario are peppered with red light cameras. Not sure how many are fake, but nevertheless, they act as a deterent. I prefer them in critical areas like Brampton, Ontario where I can sit at a red light and watch punks blatantly run through them and finger adjacent traffic. Pedestrians have died.
