Tail lamp harness
#1

Dumb question and I am probably missing the answer because I am juggling too many home/work/bike projects at once. I am installing the Lucas style lamp from J&P and have the stocker unbolted but do NOT see or find the connector for the pigtail.
I thought I might find in inside the lamp base or along the wires under the fender but it is escaping me. Where am I missing it guys?Blush

I just installed a Chic Design rear fender but it came with wiring harness and connector...........to plug into the white connector under the tool compartment. You're talking about the tail light assembly itself, right?

Right. So the wiring connector is way forward under the tool tray? I was thinking they would have put a connector much closer to the lamp body itself. I was hoping to avoid cutting or modifying the harness is at all possible.

CB4ME is correct, it's a relatively long loom. I just cut and soldered for the aftermarket lamps. With some careful work and use of black heat shrink tubing (from an electorincs shop) you can make a very reliable connection that looks very neat and doesn't stand out as a modification. I put thin heat shrink on each wire then slid over the top of the loom a larger diameter heat shrink to cover the entire section. Good luck with the project.

Like Aussieflyer I did the same thing after driving myself crazy trying to trace the wiring back to a connector somewhere under the seat. Followed Chipbeck's advice when installing the Lucas-style taillight and just cut-and-soldered closer to the actual taillight with heat shrink tubing to tightly insulate the wires.

If for some reason you wanted to install the stock taillight again, would be simple to cut-and-solder again.

Don't over think it and drive yourself nuts.

Huladog

That'll be Saturday's project. I have the shrink tubing and stuff on hand so it's just getting the time.

What a let down!
I got it installed today and will add a picture as soon as my phone recharges. But I have to say the quality on the J&P lamp is pretty poor. And for only $43 I wasn't expecting a lot. The hardware is crap, the rubber base gasket is deformed and the lamp socket is junk.
But the body looks good.

Got mine from a different supplier but I'm sure it is similar. Yes, the base gasket wouldn't lay flat so I used a bit of clear sealant to hold it to the contour of the fender before I screwed down the taillight.

The lamp socket is kind of light weight, but not much different than what I've seen before. The supplied bulb IS WEAK and I was worried if drivers behind me could see me stopping. There isn't a nice reflector behind the bulb to diffuse the light like the stock one so I got a SuperBright LED bulb to replace the weak aftermarket bulb supplied in the kit.

But ...... after all the work that low profile taillight does look good!

Huladog

I used Posi-lock T connectors due to limited space and positive screw connections . tried to post pic from phone but couldn't make work. Just had rotator cuff surgery so down and out for a while. Installed Hyperlites using their license plate bracket, and a black LED license plate frame. CBXBob.

Uggg I hated rotator cuff surgery.. for about 6 months. Then it was great. Feeling for ya for awhile though. Your good arm or your bad arm? Silly question .. it's always the good arm. Wait until you can wipe yourself. Major celebration!
