ECU and airbox upgrades advice appreciated

Hi all,

Interested to know what upgrades are recommended in a value-for-money type way from forum members. EG. PCV, EJK, various airfilters, removal (or not) of O2 sensors.

I'm riding with a full 4-4 (soon to be 4-2) system so would like to ensure fuelling is good. Not interested in chasing HP figures but would rather not run too lean/rich at varying rpm's.

A power commander and tune on a dyno will eliminate the issues with it running lean which it does by default. Well worth the money in my opinion.

I found that for approximately $20, an 02 Sensor By-Pass Plug is hard to beat. It richens up the bottom end just off idle and reduces drastic engine braking when you roll off the throttle in low gears. I've had one installed for over 2 years now, and it made a great improvement in drive-ability. You will need ONE Plug for each 02 Sensor your bike came with. See the link below...

I've had this installed for about a year now. I got curious about how much it was actually doing recently so I took it off for a commute to work and back just to see how noticeable the difference really is. It really does make a HUGE difference for the better. Without it installed it's impossible to keep the throttle steady under 3k RPM because it just generally had terrible fueling. It was actually kinda of infuriating riding in traffic, I have no idea how they shipped the bike with that terrible of fueling stock.

I've read many comments on the forum about poor fuelling, poor idle, erratic running, etc., but I guess I got a good one because mine couldn't be smoother or have better manners in traffic or at highway speeds.
It's an absolute joy to ride.

I really didn't have any problems either...no surging or poor idle, but the "Plug" greatly improved what I already had! Now there is no loss of power after warming up because the fueling doesn't get leaned out...I'm thinking that the "Plug" may even prevent the ECU from retarding the timing after warm-up (speculation only).

With the "Plug", the reduction in engine braking really helps with slow speed driving allowing you to be much smoother. It has been noted that a deft use of the clutch also helps with slow speed maneuvering, but with the "Plug", that is one more thing you don't have to worry about.

I have nothing to gain suggesting the use of the "Plug"...just a happy customer. It should also be noted that a small number have felt that it didn't make much difference to their style of riding. Of those, I think that some may not have installed it correctly, or didn't install One for Each 02 Sensor (2 are required on the DLX). For only $20 each you have little out of pocket...and it is easily and harmlessly reversible. But, for the majority who installed a "Plug", it is possibly the "biggest bang for your buck" that you will find for the CB1100.

No, clearly that is an oversimplification. The ECU Reflash, while expensive, encompasses many more parameters, and you can request that many of those parameters be "custom tuned" to your liking.
No simple "Plug" or "Resistor" can do that...but it is a start.

I think that it is important to note that one of these 02 Sensor By-Pass Plugs is provided with each Power Commander. It then provides a baseline to which other fueling improvements can be added by the PCV module.
