If the earlier tanks are 14.6 liters and the new ones 16.8, that new tanks hold 2.2 liters more gas.
I average 22 kilometers per liter riding my 2017 EX on twisty 2 lane roads.
So the new tank has 48 kilometres (30 miles) more range.
Less if you ride on 4-lane expressways.

To add to that, I've just looked up the 2017 standard model on the Japanese Honda site. Here it is.

But the specs on the site say it has a 14L tank and the EX and RS have a 16L tank. So what is this 17L tank, Peter? Can you please post a picture or two?

Hi All CB1100 riders,
Let's start with 14,6 L tank that my 2013 CB1100A/5 SPEED was equipped with. So I was on my East Canada, 10 days, 80000 km  long trip and while cruising on a hwy at 4500-50000 rpm , I ran out of gas after 286 km..Sunday, 8 am...so I was very po'd being stuck 3 = THREE km away from a gas station.
When came back home, I started looking for a bigger tank. Before that long trip, I tested my bike max range on slower roads (up to 100 km/h) and was able to make 300 km and 320 km distance during second test...  fuel reserve (last bar out of 5) was already flashing for a long time, this is why I got stuck
What really sucks out fuel is RPM, especially on a hwy long distance trip. Fuel gauge has 5 bars, and first bar is still on solid with about 4.5L of gas in tank and starts flashing shortly after.
When in 2016, I inquired Samurider/Takashi (great man!!!!) , he only had 16.5 L for my 2013, and negotiations broke out due to thinking of buying 2017 EX model. By the end of May, I visited Honda dealer and looked at  2017 CB, red, dual exhaust, spoke wheels +++ with 14.6 L tank, I decided not to trade in my 2013 for '17 model, mostly because of its small, 14.6L tank, plus few other small things I didn't like about '17 model.
Got back to Samurider/Takashi and he had even greater news for me...OEM, pearl white, 17 L ( as advertised by Takashi), so I already bought/installed it. So far I know for sure that it holds more than 16.5 L.
With full (5 bars on fuel gauge) 14.6 L tank, I was able to make about 60 km before gas gauge dropped down 1 bar  to 4 ... and so on...BUT with  full 17 L ( 5 bars on gauge), I already made 120 km before gas gauge dropped down 1 bar to 4 . Given all this, my fuel gauge already shows full when about 12-14 L of gas is pumped in a new 17 L tank... and there still is room for few extra liters.
Summarize, I believe = depends on RPM , that I'll be able to make up to 360 kms before refueling if I bring  gas gauge down to the last bar and flashing position for a long time = almost dead empty gas tank and risking running out of fuel.

Just to add few more things..
In January 2014, I bought my bike as a demo with 4500 km from a Honda dealer + Honda Plus extended warranty that ends in March 2019.
After 15000 km,  I ditched OEM Bridgestone Battlax tires (poor handling, bad cornering,  and dangerous during heavy rain....  FRT was nearly bold but REAR still a lot left)  and purchased Michelin Pilot Rd 3 tires,  FRT-120/70 ZR18, REAR-160-60 ZR 18 (awesome tires.. I only use Michelin tires for my bike and 2 cars , including 2 sets of car winter wheels - NO substitute).
I now have 42000 km on my bike and will replace tires and all the brakes in next 2018 season/50+K.
With my driving habits and road conditions, I changed spark plugs and air filter ( all OEM) at 40000 km but these should easy go to 50 K...
I ONLY use Motul 7100, 100% Synthetic Ester - 10W40 MA2 motor oil and regularly replace it with OEM oil filter every 5000 - 60000 km.
So far, I did all my maintenance by myself, except tire replacement. I replaced  OEM = 18T front sprocket with 19T, and I keep my chain slack at 20-25 mm instead of 30 mm as per service manual, I carry NO passenger and nobody else ride my bike.
In winter, I will replace slightly wet rocker cover gasket.
I never took out my bike for a shorter run than 70 km ( after work ride), and  my longest run is 1200 km/day, very often 800-1000 km/daily when going for a long trip with my '07 BMW-1200cc buddy.
I am licensed automotive service technician with 30+ years of experience with the same make.

Yes we have noticed that higher rpms, and speeds use more fuel, but that only makes sense.

Riding locally 45-60 mph on curvy backroads its not unusual for me to get close to 60 mpg. In which case I know I can go over 200 miles before needing to start looking for gas. Take a trip, with freeway droning, like my 700 mile trip back from Arkansas, 12 hours at 75-85 mph and I saw mpg drop into the upper 40s. When that is the case I know I need to start looking for gas in the 140-150 mile range. That would be true of most any vehicle however. It simply takes more fuel to push something faster. For the CB the break point seems to be about 70 mph. For continued high speed cruising one would need at least 5 gals or 19 L of fuel to guarantee 200 miles on a tank.

Even guys that are used to pounding out the miles would have trouble riding 200 miles straight without stopping, especially on a bike not designed to cut the wind or protect the rider .... like the CB.

Then there's the seat, which most people can't seem to ride for the 3 hours at a time it would take to run out 5 gallons of fuel in 1 sitting. lol

The part number on the photo of the box is 17520-MGC-N20ZA which is the 2014 DLX tank (4.4 gallons (16.65 liters)).

Thanks for the information, Peter. The 2017 US EX model is said to have a tank capacity of 4.4 US gallons or 16.65 litres—see http://powersports.honda.com/2017/cb1100...ions.aspx. Yet the Canadian bike is said to be only 14.6 litres—see https://motorcycle.honda.ca/model/naked/cb1100a. The Canadian bike as shown has the new tank. On the Honda Japan website the EX and RS tanks are shown as being 16 litre capacity.

Something's not quite right.

Nortoon, what capacity is your tank?

Hi,
I have 2013 white in Canada and just replaced my 14.6 L tank with OEM white 17 L from Samurider, fits perfectly. I only had to transfer fuel pump assy and filler cap. Not to confuse you, my new 17L tank has similar shape to 14.6 L one and is NOT seamless as from 2017 MY. Hope this helps
Cheers to all,
Peter
