Steering yoke nut gps mount

Hello brothers, sorry I've been quiet on the posting front, I've been spending a lot of time in the saddle. I picked up a ram mount for the steering nut on the top of the yoke and I've been having a heck of a time finding an open nut replacement for it. I don't want to send it back for the handler bar mount since I prefer the minimalist look. Does anyone know the thread size of the nut or any other bike that shares the same size? I know it's a 32mm outside and it's torqued to 75ftlbs. I'm really eager to put my old phone to good use as an offline gps for the long wandering rides. I can provide pics if needed. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would recommend looking at Honda part number 90304-MJ4-670 that costs about $10. It is an open top nut that fits over 100 different Hondas from 400cc to 1800cc covering 30 years. Usually it has a rubber plug.

I didn't try it on my own CB1100 (too lazy to pull the bars) but it's a good bet.

The steering nut socket size on all CB1100s is actually 30mm, like the open top nut.

It will be a metric thread, so it's easy to measure.

Measured OD will be sligthly under the nominal thread size. So if you get 29.8 on a bolt, you are talking about M30.

Regarding pitch, in metric threads it's just the distance between two consecutive crests (or two consecutive valleys). Or measure the length to cover 10 threads and divide by 10 to get the pitch.

It's probably a standard thin thread, so I guess the pitch will be 1.5 or 2.

So you are looking at M30x1.5 or M30x2.

You can use bolts as "thread gauge": M10 bolt as a thread gauge for pitch 1.5, and M14 for pitch 2.

My best guess is MXXx1.25 or MXXx1.50. For comparison, spark plug is ..x1.25

Micah, I am assuming you are using the Ram mount that uses a rubber "stem" with an expanding grommet at the bottom. The rubber mounting really helps on vibration.

Yes exactly. I'm hoping the finished product is as streamline as I'm thinking it will be. I've heard good things about them and it's cheaper than getting the case for the quadlock that the bike came with.

we just did this to my friends sprint gt. took a stock nut, drilled it, used ram mount ball and passed through hole, used nylock nut on other side, installed. done. have spare non drilled nut in spares box to reverse if need be.

Yeah I'm big on keeping the OEM parts around so I didn't want to drill it, but I found a nice black open nut for cheap enough.

Thanks for the info, I took the and think I found a suitable replacement, I guess we'll see in 2 weeks when the nut comes in!

I bought this very same kit for my Moto Guzzi. It never did solidly lock up inside the hollow bolt stem. Approached it from a number of different angles to try to resolve that. None worked. Still spins around and I wouldn’t trust it to hold a $700 phone. My 2 cents. YMMV and probably will.

I haven't used this particular kit, but when installing bar-end mirrors, I've been able to just slide some fuel line into the handlebar, with a long 6 mm bolt and nut through them and tighten it up securely.

In the steering stem, you could just use some oil line that will fit more snugly.
