Light pod in windshield?
#1

I just bought a Black Oak LED 40w CREE XM-L2 pod light (about 3 1/2" square) and was thinking about mounting it low on my National Plexistar windshield just above the headlight. Anybody try this before or have thoughts about this.
*
I want to use it as a spot for night illumination of critters/things way down the dark roadways. This spot is rated to 780 Meters and draws 2.8 amps.
*
I previously had the Twisted Throttle Denali D2 2.0 lights installed on my front fender mounts (one on each side), but they did not illuminate any better than my PIAA halogen head light bulb.
**
Attached picture includes a yellow circle where I was thinking about mounting the light,

Somebody here posted a CB recently that had shown up on Craig's somewhere around Phoenix, if I recall.

It had a single spotlight that was mounted low on one side, most likely on one of the engine mounts. Gave the bike a cool, jaunty look.

Riding buddies are very skeptical of plexiglass being able to sustain itself without cracking (vibration, etc). I am not of the same mind because I grew up around small aircraft which all had plexi windows. However, I modifying my idea to use a single clamped deflector clip-on that I can install the light pod on. Additionally, because it's detachable, I only need to clamp on this little deflector/light assembly when I am doing night riding (which I only 2 or 3 times during a cross country trip). Clip on is inexpensive and I can cut it down to small size if I desired.

Learned an Illumination 101 lesson last night. I decided to hookup the Black Oak light pod last night (with wires hanging out) and try it out on various dark and semi-dark roadways in the area. Parked on side of road and hand held the pod to test various bike locations and angles. WOW ... really learned something about how illumination works and doesn't work. When I held it at mirror level slightly pointing down a bit, it worked great ... I could see the road surface for much farther than my PIAA headlight. When I held it at front fender mount level (where my previous Denali D2's were mounted) parallel with the road, the road was not illuminated (I could vaguely see that there was a little bit more light in the air) ... so I pointed it down a bit I could see the road surface but not much farther than the PIAA headlight. SO, now I am thinking about devising a quick release light mount to hook on the mirror body somewhere. Smile
