Windshield

I just purchased a 2014 CB1100 Deluxe. I want to add a windshield to my bike. Does anybody have any suggestions or advice on what kind to buy. I do not want a large windshield but I want it to work well on the freeways of Southern California to keep the wind off my upper body. Thanks for the help.[/font]

Welcome to the forum, teamwoods5. Congratulations on purchasing such a fine machine. Others who indulge in windscreens will be full of helpful advice.

Congrats and welcome. I’m in OC and work in Santa Ana and Mid Wilshire. I’ve got a Dart flyscreen. It’s small, keeps wind off of my chest and leaves my helmet in clean air, so no buffeting worries.

Congrats and welcome.
Too small shield may not provide upper bode protection as you wanted, choose wisely.
I am 5.7 and have taller shield by National Cycle. Previously, had a shorter one and was not too happy. Very individual choice.

Some use the Dart flyscreen and like it. I have a Road Comet fairing (they are small, but work for me) for warm weather riding and for cool weather I use the National Cycle EX. It may be a bit large for you. Ferret has an EX that he cut down. He can talk about that.

And Welcome!!

Welcome to the Forum TW5.

I used the Dart Marlin flyscreen and it was about 50% effective for speeds up to about 120 km/h. Certainly, at 80 to 100 km/h it felt good. It was also minimally intrusive in terms of affecting the bike's fashion and you didn't have to look through it. I am over 6'.

Finding a near perfect windshield can be an exercise in frustration.
So much depends on the design, how much protection you want, your physical size, arm length, how you sit on the bike, etc.
I'm 5' 8" and am using a Marlin too. I like it a lot, but it doesn't work for everyone.

I wanted the minimum possible size but with enough to keep the wind off the body. For that I've chosen the National Cycle deflector shield for a number of bikes. Mounted high it's been enough for me to spends weeks out on a motorcycle in all kinds of weather above 50 degrees F OK, though if it's raining really hard you'll need very good rain gear in order to stay dry because the coverage is so minimal.

I use an NC Street Shield EX that I ended up cutting 5 1/2" off the top of. Provides protection up to my collarbone. I'm 5'6".

Something I considered during my wind shield/screen deliberations was a post by The Ferret, wherein he passed on that through trial and error among members and his own experience, it was found that shields with a top edge no more than 10" above the ignition switch did not create a turbulence problem that shields taller than that did have. Ferret please correct if I am not passing that on accurately. Since then I have read numerous posts indicating turbulence problems with many taller shields, and is a reason some members have cut the height of theirs down. We have all been in the position of having some accessory that seemed like a good idea at the time, end up sitting on a shelf in the garage when we discovered it was not such a good idea for whatever reason. Just do your homework, look at all the options, read reviews and comments about the subject on the forum, and you will find what is right for you.
