Thruxton R: Owner/Rider opinions, please.
#1
I'm contemplating trading my Street Cup in for a Thruxton R. While it handles beautifully, it doesn't have the power I want for all-round riding. I can accept a little less agility for more power and brakes.

What is that bike like to live with? Anyone around here have one long-term?

I've seen some MY17's for deep discounts here and there.

With 97 HP and 82 lbs-ft of torque in about a 475-lb package, I think I could live with it for an all-day bike a lot better.

My earlier comments for the average guy notwithstanding, I'd go for the R as I want all the brakes and suspension I can get.

Ulvetanna, I would be curious to know if you have been on the motorcycle merry-go-round your entire riding career or only since the internet started playing a bigger role in your moto-based research and associated discussions?

Always. I've owned about 70 motorcycles of all types excepting heavyweight touring bikes. This is over about 35 years. Dirt bikes, dual-purpose and MX 2-stroke, ADV before anyone called them that, always had some kind of supersport or superbike, standards, Harleys, I just like all kinds of bikes.

The Internet has never played any role in my riding career. I just dive in and buy a bike and if it doesn't work out after a certain time, I say goodbye to it.

My impression of the Thruxton R, at first, was that it was top-heavy as compared to the Street Cup. It feels much like the CB1100 but of course, a bit lighter.

My issue with the Street Cup after a year and 5,000 miles is that the bike is too soft, not suspension, but power/brakes. Power/weight ratio is not favorable to my riding needs.

The Thruxton has been out long enough so if there were any longer-term issues they may have come to light.

Frankly I seriously doubt there are any real concerns based on the quality of the Street Cup/Bonneville series. I see a lot of Triumphs on the road as well.

I had a real good ride with a guy on a Thruxton once as I mentioned, and that settled the issue for me as to which bike could get around a tight turn better, but for practical reasons the Thruxton has the kind of power and brakes I want, and the right size wheels.

I have two bikes I'd be happy to trade off to reduce the number I need to maintain and hassle over, one of which is really never ridden (F700GS). That Thruxton looks, based on specs, like it might get ridden a lot more.

I'll be buying and trying different motorcycles as long as I hold my license.

I don't have a hard time accepting that your addiction might have existed prior to the influence of the Internet, but clearly the above statement is simply not true.

Thanks for that; you think I would have already know about it, but no. I'll check for any issues, etcetera.

Capo is the only person that I know for sure who owns a Thruxton R here on this forum and as best I can recall he was quite happy with it.

That was my recollection. The reason I asked here first, or at all, for that matter, is because the demographic here is generally pretty experienced and pretty honest. I am not on any other forums, zero, zip, nada. This is the only one I visit. Period. Believe it or not!Wink

Only thing I can find so far, which could be annoying, is the bikes have an issue with stalling. Triumph just issued a service bulletin to reflash the ECU to prevent this happening.

I believe a few of the 900HT bikes had this issue but not many. Never had it happen on either of mine.

I don't want a whole set of new problems; if I felt the Thruxton was going to be a magnificent motorcycle, I'd probably make plans to get one. I'll keep tabs on this but it's still looking like a leaning toward a 2017 EX at the moment. Have not heard any complaints about that machine.

My son has a friend with a Thruxton R who has had the stalling issue. My brother and a nephew both have had stalling issues with their Bonneville's as well...one a T-120 and the other a Bonnie black. They installed some rubber diaphragm in the gas tank as a fix I believe. No ECU reflash. Then again we haven't tested them to see if they are fixed due to being winter. None of them will ride in the winter.
